NewsCloud goes open source

NewsCloud, the site that broke the YouTube Comedy Central takedown story with a reporting engine of missing clips is the first Web 2.0 social journalism site to release its code to the open source community. The PHP and JavaScript code base has extensive features including customizable reader pages and nightly autoposting to blogs.

Easy. It's a site where a bunch of computer geeks who know next to nothing about journalism, and care about next to nothing besides "the web", go post their stories and vote for other people's stories that agree with their own point of view, while the other 99.93% of the population continues to read newspapers and watch TV.

They would need to tortuously define these things in order for Wikinews not to be a "Web 2.0 social journalism site."

Just an FYI, I registered at NewsCloud a few months ago and they've been sending me (sort of spammy) email every week since then. I've had difficulty getting them to stop.

THIS JUST IN: The percentage of people reading newspapers and watching TV rather than reading our site has dropped to only 99.92%. Citizen journalism is on the march! When asked to comment, someone who shares my point of view said "People should vote for this story."
