That's probably not too far off. I had a male cat that loved rough play, including the kind of patting the fluffy cat is getting (but a bit harder by the looks of it). We also used to scratch and rub really really hard, digging our fingers in and dragging him across the floor. This was particularly good when he was moulting. He liked soft petting and stuff too, pretty much any attention was good. Sadly he died of liver disease when we was eleven.
I read in a journal article that cats have less sensitive pain receptors than humans, so some things that would be sore for us don't hurt them. I assume this is related.

I thought my cat was the only one who loved a good spanking. I have no idea how it started, but nothing I do (other than feed her) makes her happier. To be honest, though, she's neurotic as hell, so I'm not sure if she can be used as any kind of bellweather for cat behavior.

My cat hates it when we touch his lower back. His tails curls over his back naturally (like a chow-chow dog or something) -- it has always been like that -- so I think it hurts if you mess around with his lower back. He hates being picked up as well and will hardly even come on our laps.
So, no spanking here.
Though, he does enjoy having his nipples tweeked.

We speculated that when young, a cat's mom would tap it on it's lower back so the cat would raise its butt so that a mom could lick its ass clean, because a kitten doesn't always know how to completely clean itself there.

Not to pick on you...but that comment reflects, to me, an attitude you see on a few Ask questions that came up re: pets-and-are-they-showing-affection-or-just-marking behavior. I have never commented in one of those but always thought, forget about what you read in a book or what science tells you. My cat shows me affection, great deals of it, when he rubs his head on my chin he is NOT telling me to feed him, he is saying I love you papa.
