For many days now, a mysterious splash screen at 2600.com. Is the famous Hacker Quarterly folding? Are they throwing in the towel against the MPAA? Is the site being redesigned, and moved to Canada? Is this a protest against the WBAI situation?

What does that have to do with anything? Matt wasn't talking about generic "some site's down, that might be interesting" posts but specifically about reporting Blogger outages here.

I agree with tranquileye - I haven't heard what's up with 2600 and their black splash screen seems odd. I wonder if it means anything, and if so, what.

Anyone know?

Isn't 2600 in trouble for simply linking to sites with the DeCSS code, and it was never actually on their server?

Mark, that's true, but I'm not sure what practical effect that had, if any.

BTW - upon reading that whole thread more closely, I see my earlier post was a bit off. But the fact is that in this case the 2600 site is still up - it's just that the main content area is simply black, while the sidebars etc are all intact.

Transient coding issue? Or something related to the recent legal problems?

This has had the folks in alt.2600 going for some time now. I didn't see it, but apparently there was a countdown of some sort, in Chinese number characters, with gifs suggesting the hometown of various dictators (Stalin, Sharon, Hussein, Bush ...). May have been a promotion for Freedom Downtime, a short film about Kevin Mitnick.

Though MeFi has many highly intelligent posters, it's not the first place I'd ask about goings-on at 2600.

DeCSS as a .wav file???

Karl, this has nothing to do with the site being down. The site isn't down, it's up.

Okay, it was a redesign, and a bit of an anti-climax.
