Truc is one of my favorite French words (disclaimer: I know very little French). Just means "thingamabob" or "whatzit".

See also chindogu, Japanese inventions that are deliberately quasi-practical. Also the web design of the chindogu.com page is impressively 1997.

Truc means "trick", as in "That's a cool trick."
