the 'dismal science' indeed

I was reading Sam Adam's memoir last night, and his first little bit covers his time on the S. African desk of the CIA, where he analyzed the progression of the Congo Crisis of 1964.

The intermixture of a) immense physical wealth -- abundant natural resources -- with b) truly stone-age tribal mentalities, c) the usual multinational industrial concerns and d) Cold War jockeying between the US, European, Soviet, and Chinese clandestine services was simply utterly fascinating.

My stepsister, who went to art school in Harare, once applied for a job with the Zimbabwe government to design their bank notes.
She didn't get the job (not that she's too bothered about that now, in Australia), but it seems that the person who did has been kept pretty busy the last few years.

No. You need eight. Two is one billion. Four is two billions, or billions. Two sets of four would be the minimum needed for a Sagan.

Did I just write that? Kill me.

This is the fourth set of high denomination notes to be issued this year, the first being in January when a 10 million dollar note was put into circulation.

$10 million to $500 million in four months? That's what I like to call kindling inflation.

Something that's been done three times in the past six months is news when they do it a fourth? C'mon.
