Thank God I saw that movie before the Internet meme came into being.

If you can actually speak German, the hundreds of different versions of this clip kind of fall flat.
They kind of fall flat anyway.

The closing line should've been "I'm too big to fail." IMO.
In another opinion, I'm thinking the internet should find another foreign language film clip to play around with.

[insert comment about "wann das nunstuck ist git und slottermeyer" here.]
Also, I am kinda sick of seeing this clip ... the first time I saw it, the subtitles had something to do with Adolf losing his WoW or Runescape account. The next time it was to parody something else. Aren't there any other movies where a fictionalized Hitler flips out? Why can't someone put funny subtitles in a Riefenstahl film? (Probably someone has and that's been overdone, too.)
Ja! Beierhund oder der flipperwald gesprt!

I am not an expert, but I think the subtitles for that are completely wrong. Here are a few things I noticed and thought about, and I think they make for a pretty strong case against these so-called "translators":
- Hitler died in 1945, and it seems like this is footage of him in the final days, in his bunker. The housing bubble is a contemporary event.
- The map they are pointing to is quite clearly Berlin and its environs, and in this period housing values were not a topical issue that Hitler would be involved with.
- I can't make out all the German, but I clearly heard the name "Steiner", and from reading a few accounts of the last days of Hitler, I think he is asking that Steiner's group move to defend, and his generals are explaining that this group is destroyed or out of contact with the High Command.
- On a more basic level, notice that the staff are all generals and other high-ranking military officers. It makes no sense that they would be advising Hitler on economic matters - that would be the job of Speer at this point in the war, and I think he was already in Flensburg.
- Hitler's anger could not be explained by any sort of economic downturn - as Fuhrer he had access to whatever riches he desired, and anyway lived a fairly simple life. Given the historical context it is obvious that he is raving about the his betrayal by the German armed forces and the German people.
Marisa: thanks for the link. Unlike so many of the other kids here who are too cool for school, I enjoyed it. Probably because I don't generally watch parody vidclips, but you presented it well in a simple sentence.
Also, I saw Downfall some time ago and was riveted.

Dude, the Red Army and its mortars did amazing things to housing values. In Berlin, and even more so in Prussia.

I'm not terribly good with sarcasm/irony - whatever humor you kids are using today - but I don't think that Meatbomb was really confused about the intent of that video.
posted by cimbrog at 10:44 AM on November 13, 2008
- Its pretty obvious that no one would think Hitler would comment on the current housing bubble. Outside of the fringe occult, which I do no believe Meatbomb is a member, he isn't known for his precognitive abilities.
- Meatbomb seems to have a pretty good grasp of what the actual events of this section of the clip was supposed to represent in a historical context. The translation obviously doesn't match Meatbomb's knowledge of WWII history.
- He is wrong about Hitler being angry, though. Its a well-known fact that Hitler had a brain parasite that made him crazy, paranoid and ultimately suicidal. So he could be angry about anything.

Meatbomb, I am disturbed by your historical revisionism about this crucial chapter in world history. If we don't remember the German housing crisis of 1945, we will be doomed to repeat it.

The funniest one of these, to me, was one about the Fairytale household's particular VFX specialty-- the remarkably unglamorous world of film scanning and recording, client I/O, and imaging quality.
The fact that there even was a Downfall parody about this should tell you just how many species of shark the meme's jumped.
