Judee Sill (previously) was the first artist signed to David Geffen's first record label Asylum. She released a couple of albums. No one really noticed. She died, another casualty of drugs. Her music, however has been covered many times: The Hollies Riko Shinahara The Fleet Foxes Plattel robin pecknold Cass Elliot Graziano Romani And Judee Sill doing a cover of her own.

Thanks a million! I just bought both Sill's albums on thick heavy creamy vinyl, and they're divine. Of course, Warren Zevon also covered "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" on Mutineer.

I couldn't find the Zevon cover anywhere. I looked hard, since that was the version that turned me onto Sill in the first place.

The Turtles' take on "Lady-O" is beautiful too.

Judee Sill was one of those artists that I got sick of hearing referenced so I finally bought an album a few years ago just to hear what all the hubbub was about. It ended up being a great purchase that led to picking up her second - which have both become favorites. Until recently I thought that "Jesus was a Cross Maker" was a Kris Kristofferson song, but then I realized I was thinking of of "Jesus Was a Capricorn".

Andy Partridge of XTC mad a comment once that Sill's song The Kiss was the most beautiful song ever written, so I had to see what he was on about. I can definitely hear her influence in his melody lines.

I'm sure y'all have seen her live performance of that one, but just in case. . . .
