I'd like to smack this guy for messing up books with his crummy painting.

L.A. is ... incomprehensible/fascinating. I'm so glad it's over there.

I like his paintings, not sure what the books bring.

Those paintings on books would look better without all that paint on them.
Gabriel Liston takes children's books (I forget the name of the particular series he uses) and seals them up and then paints on them. They end up looking something like old delft paintings. I like them.
I wonder how many other painters are painting on books (rather than in them, like Tom Phillips), and in what different ways?

"Fecalface" is just...ugh. It took me a moment to get past my revulsion. Shitfaced is OK--everybody understands that--but Fecal Face is so unnecessarily graphic. It conjures up steaming piles of poo with little googly-eyed faces. Or a guy who has covered his face with....
Wait. So we were talking about paintings on books? I don't have such a huge reverence for books that I can't see using for some other purpose. This would be OK with me if the paintings were better. They are pretty crude, however, and the projects just look like amateur hour to me.

I like the concept of painting on the books like that, but I don't so much love his actual painting.

If want painting on books, check out Tom Phillips's Humument... An ongoing project where a Victorian novel gets reworked page by page.

It's really hard at this point to do book art that's not just gimmicky. The Tom Philips stuff is great. There's a reason for the paintings to be on books other than I PAINTED THINGS FROM THESE BOOKS ON THE BOOKS LOOK.
That being said, I'm not really sure that he uses the books hims paintings are from. Also, this guy will go far anyway. Very pseudo-intellectual. Very easy for the patrons to explain to their friends.
