Very cool post. I'm just finishing listening to first volume of Foote's 3 volume Civil War history, having had my interest whetted by Team of Rivals and The Case of Abraham Lincoln, so your timing is serendipity for me.

Since discovering this post (maybe one of my favorite all-time Metafilter posts), I've been reading The Last Full Measure, which I learned about in this comment.

Now these blogs present new, deep, interesting Civil War history. I'm glad I was introduced to the crazy story of Pauline Cushman-Fryer - a Union Spy.

What I'm getting at is that Metafilter has given me more understanding of the Civil War than 12 years of public school education, 4 years of undergraduate study, and a Masters degree.

So, um, yeah. Thanks!
