Recently on sale in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, was "Very Strange Crisp," a type of lollipop. If you haven't yet discovered Nury Vittachi's "Traveller's Tales" in the Far East Economic Review, check him out right now. I guarantee, you will not be disappointed. Absolute funniest man I have ever read this side of the International Date Line.

There are all sorts of strange signs around Asia, and the rest of the world. Just here in Taipei I've seen the "See You Again Crab" restaurant, the "Mother Fucker" clothing store, half of a zebra at a road crossing and, of course, the Hitler restaurant.

OF course, there's the Thai Restaurant in Manila called "Mai Thai," which in colloquial Thai means, "Not Thai."

i've corresponded with nury vittachi several times. he's a very nice person.

like me, he lives in hong kong, and he has a column in the hong kong i-mail.

i have not yet had a chance to meet him in person yet, but i'm certain we will soon. maybe i'll post his picture on my site when i do.

I have it on good authority that Rock Bar Mother is fine joint indeed.

bwg >> Truth to tell, it was from reading your blog this morning that I was suddenly reminded of Mr. Vittachi's Traveller's Tales, and decided to read him a bit after a long absence from his pages. I was not disappointed. I never am with him. I must thank you for the link, else I would have had an otherwise joyless day. :D

brownpau >> hey thanks! i appreciate it.

nury's been all over the place though, so i just assumed you knew him through many of the other publications for which he writes.

and i agree - he's always fun to read.

peace out the far east!

Naw, I only knew him through FEER, and from there, I was led to his other stuff. I think I'm a drooling Nury fan boy now. ^^
