MeFi post: The children who remember their past lives
I know the legacy media is in a weird place these days but what the heck is this doing in a newspaper?
posted to MetaFilter by pullayup at 8:34 PM on May 2, 2024
That link interogative mood shared is disturbing. Especially the stuff about the past life therapist encouraging the parents to tell a child that his nightmares were as the result of a past life.

What does that do to a child?

MeFi post: “There is an episode of Bluey that Disney does not want you to see”
I freaking love this episode. Both my girls were born at home and we don’t play prissy about childbirth. My 5 year old immediately wanted to play Dad Baby - sweetest thing ever!

HE HAS A NAME. It’s Pat

In other episodes too, the girls regularly address him as "Lucky's Dad." I admire how game he is, but my favorite character is Muffin. (From the FPP list, Faceytime, Pizza Girls, and Sleepover. Library is also great.) I feel some relief seeing a kid less in control of herself than Bluey & Bingo are.

For those who are wondering, the song Lucky's Dad is singing is True Blue by John Williamson, the unofficial team anthem for the Aussie national cricket team and was also performed acoustically at Steve Irwin's funeral.

Just watched the episode (never seen Bluey before) and it was legit SUPER CUTE and AWESOME. Verrrry Ozzie, though, I could understand maybe half of what they were saying.

Disney allowed the LGBT+ content in Owl House, but cancelled the show. Sort of like they could never quite decide whether they were going to stand up against the Don't Say Gay stuff in Florida or not. Disney is very concerned about trying to walk the line of not offending queer people too much but also not offending people who are offended by queer people too much. They are corporate fuckers at heart.

Thank you, Disney corporation, for helping shield my children from the perversions of cricket. That's one "boundary" I'm glad they're not pushing!

I've loved Auster's work for most of my adult life. Currently in the middle of 4 3 2 1, which is a fantastic example of his preoccupation with how a slight (or large) change in one circumstance in a person's life can lead to entirely different existence. And like most of his work, ruminating on what might or might not be autobiographical in it is part of the fun. What a tremendous body of work he left us, what a beautiful and profound and sensitive and hilarious and strange writer.... [more]

The neighbor dad asking for cricket updates during “delivery” and also the “baby” crawling back up and refusing to be born was so cute. Why are we so uptight we can’t have this.

Disney is fairly predictable on what they cut for Disney+. Seeing the original ABC version of Relax when Bandit says “alright dingleberries, let the holiday begin” upon pulling up to the vacation condo, it’s no shock that it became “super troopers” later on.

Before the birthing part started I thought it might be the mother rolling her magazine up to hit the father with if he said something annoying, and then doing it...

I expected this to be the one where the father farted (sorry, did a fluffy) but apparently that's been un-banned?

In other news, my 13-year-old has us watching Owl House on Disney+. I went into this pretty skeptical. It's a series, aimed at 13-year-olds, set in a fantasy world that reminds me of some superior shows like Adventure Time, Kipo, Steven Universe, etc etc etc. At first my vibe from Owl House was that it seemed a bit derivative and the humor especially was kind of formulaic like you might expect from... Paul Auster was a very important author to me during a particular time in my life. Checking Goodreads, it looks like I read 14 Auster books between 1999 and 2010. I lived in Park Slope Brooklyn during the early part of that period and knew that Auster frequented the Community Bookstore, but I never encountered him there. Sadly, with the passage of time, I can't remember much from any of the books. Maybe I need to do some re-reading. Also, I've got 4321 on my shelf and really need to give it... [more]

Yeah, that's completely harmless. FFS Disney.

Also, Lucky's Dad deserves a lot more credit than he gets for always going with it when the Heelers drag him into their weird shenanigans.

Saw an article that had an interesting set of quotes trying to demonstrate how EA was a cover for "existential risk" the whole time. I'm not sure if it does that, but I think it does indicate that the rot runs pretty deep into the core, and it's not a weirdo fringe or a person here or there.

MeFi post: Ukraine war heading into third summer
And out of Chechnya, there are reports that strongman Ramzan Kadyrov is terminally ill with pancreatic necrosis, prompting concerns in Moscow on how to handle a succession. The Kadyrov clan is backed by the Russian state after two wars in a row in the republic, with a majority wanting to secede. But how tight is their grip on power? Especially these days with the Russian army deeply committed in Ukraine?... [more]

BTW, there's a huge amount of protests going on in Georgia (the country) over the proposed Russian-style "foreign agents" legislation. Puts one in mind of the run-up to the Orange Revolution, and many protesters are bringing Ukrainian and EU flags along their own into the streets. Someone could probably do a good FPP on this.

A while back, I watched The Music of Chance, not knowing Auster wrote it and has a cameo in it. It was good. Just like everything else of Auster's that I've seen or read.

He was one of my dad’s favorite writers. Dad got City of Glass when his life started going sideways (divorce from my mom, trip to rehab, about to lose his job), and I think he saw himself in the main character. Many years later, I found Dad’s notes on City of Glass and incorporated them into my capstone project on The New York Trilogy.

Bye Paul. In the off chance that there’s an afterlife, tell my dad I said hi.... [more]

A friend recommended City of Glass to me and since then whenever I've been in a bookstore or library I've kept my eye out for any new books of his. When I was in Japan I was able to pick up a copy of The Book of Illusions and I don't know how many times I read it (English books were hard to come by at the time so good ones were treasured).

I like the description of the Glasgow University first folio which was annotated by someone who appears to have known the actors who originally performed the works.

(1) I added "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog" by Norma Tanega because the song compels it.

(2) I added "Giant Kitty" by Shonen Knife because they rule and neither SK song suggested her is actually on Tidal (a tragedy of streaming).

(3) I added John K. Samson's... [more]

emptythought, the one bright point about all of this is that, for a long while, Google's benevolent stewardship made it seem like it might be possible to have a corporation that did mostly good things. Google made a strong case that techno-utopianism was not only possible, but viable.

It's been at least 14 years in coming (since the demise of Google Reader [puts a dollar in the Reader Lament Jar]), but it's now evident it's all fallen apart. And if freaking... [more]

I'm curious: was there anything like the First Folio produced for other playwrights of the time? It seems it must be a sign of how much Shakespeare's work was esteemed even by his contemporaries, but I'm wondering if he was unique in that.

As noted above, Johnson's "Workes" was the only thing even vaguely similar in terms of "popular" writing (and certainly not something done for something as lowbrow as plays).... [more]
