These people are acting in a completely irrational fashion, you're dealing with active voter suppression because you'd win in a fair election, but it's your fault when you lose because you're not catering to whatever magical message would work with irrational voters and keep traditional D voters showing up to the polls."

I remind us all of the 2016 election in Michigan, where Trump won by 10K votes; 172K went to the Libertarians, 51K to the Greens; 16K to the Constitution Party candidate.

Also worth noting the biggest bloc in MI, which was approx 2.7 million voting-aged people who did not vote at all. These voters have always been on the table for the taking, winning even just 1% of them would have hugely influenced the outcome of the election.... [more]

People with more legal knowledge, can you tell me if the following is the right way to think about this?

It seems like Reeves could perfectly well have ruled against the qualified immunity claim. He knows that would be overturned by the Supreme Court, but it's something he could have done - taken on the lousy precedent himself, as the Fifth Circuit ultimately decided to do in the other (Section 1981) case (let us not fail to celebrate the digs at those judges for their... So has he resigned and done something useful with his legal knowledge and eloquence, or is he going to continue to rubber stamp state violence with the occasional crocodile tear?

This is an extremely unfavorable attribution of intention and motive to someone who I don't think you've sufficiently demonstrated should be subject to your purity tests. Since the total destruction of the judicial system does not appear to be on the horizon, I might suggest... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Natural Disaster Property Damage
This is a location-specific legal question. In many places, the tree would be your landlord's problem unless the tree was obviously dead/compromised and the neighbor negligently failed to have it dealt with. If the tree was in good condition as far as the neighbor knew, then they probably aren't responsible for it having fallen on your landlord's property. If that's the case then your landlord takes care of the fence and the part of the tree that's on his property, and you take care of the... [more]

While natural for the demon sex to drown out the rest of this story, I was more interested in where this Doctor came from, what sort of practice she runs, and why DJT was even watching her. The google results were not surprising, but are worth mentioning, so another political detour here:

By not pursuing this against her, you're effectively giving her $1300. If you had not been rear-ended by her, would you have randomly given her $1300 out of the goodness of your heart? I think the answer to that question should help you decide what to do.

As a pragmatic matter, a driver that routinely hits parked cars (as suggested by damage to her vehicle) is probably not someone who should be driving.

I don't even understand why an engineer would consent to undertake the translation of machine code to a higher-level language. The software is supposed to be a reflection of the tax code, not vice versa. Just spend the time and money to port the tax code to a human-readable, machine-agnostic language.

I wish more people would recognize "I don't understand the problem or the motivations behind it, but here's my simple and obvious solution" for what it is.

As the mother of a 17yo freerunner, what I want to say re: why boys gravitate to parkour nowadays is that if you have a super jumpy, energetic boy who starts off in Gymboree and My Gym type places even as he's just barely started walking, and then graduates to gymnastics around age four or five when the manager of the toddler gym says "Hey, he's jumping so high and so far and throwing himself around with such vigor that our facility isn't really safe for him," so you enroll him at a... I also would love to see it go further -- each group trains each other for a week, and you get to see how good they can get in a couple days instead of just one, then each group goes back to their own home discipline, and sees... [more]
