Ask MeFi post: Making Sense of AdSense
King Walnut, I hope you're still checking this thread.

As maxwelton notes, I have made vague disclosures about the revenue from my various sites (of which GRS is by far the most important). I do make several hundred dollars a month total from a variety of sources. Google is one of them. But it's not the most important one, not by a long shot.

Whether or not Adsense is a viable business model will depend completely on your site, your content, and... [more]

Recently, a guy I was being introduced to took my hand like so, bent down as if to kiss the back, but instead gently pressed his forehead to it.

I was touched. So I'd recommend that if you can pull it off.

Ouch.

(a) One of the tires on my bicycle just went flat. I was going to do a twenty-mile ride tomorrow. Does the hive mind have any tips for riding on a flat tire?

(b) I just locked myself out of my house. Does anybody know where I can find a cheap bulldozer rental?

(c) [fr0zen's original question]

Do you see the point of commonality between the two hypotheticals and the actual question?... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Sex in Space?
Ah, what the hell...

A very good friend of mine worked on the Space Shuttle about 12 years ago, when he toiled for a Very Large Government Contractor. They tried to compartmentalize everyone's jobs, so no one knew what the other was doing, but he did chat with the oldster NASA engineers over lunch. His answer? Yes. (And officially.) As you can imagine, it was cumbersome and unromantic -- though apparently, also hilarious.

But then again, this is... [more]

I can't talk to my mom because I do no right in her eyes when it comes to relationships/money - not that she can talk (divorced 4 times, seemingly on her way to marriage 5).

Ask MeFi post: Chinatown - would we fit?
The landlords in Chinatown, Flushing prefer asians because they do not have a culture of litigation. Many of the rentals there have shortcomings that could be exploited by a legal-minded tenant. Chinese renters are less likely, for instance, to deduct rent for days the water heater doesn't work.

For this reason the Flushing landlords also prefer east Indian tenants.

Ask MeFi post: OS X: copy/paste filenames
In Unix, in cases like that, the files are listed in the order that they're linked in the inode chain, which has to do with the order in which they're added to the directory. I don't know if Apple changed that in the process of adapting Next's OS, but I bet it hasn't.

Apparently Huxley had not read We (which is a stunningly brilliant novel, for its words as much as for its ideas), despite the obvious similarities of both books. But there is a short story/essay by Jerome K. Jerome which is thought to have been an inpiration for both We and Brave New World.

Ask MeFi post: Can I drink just juice and not actually have to eat vegetables?
Yes, the juices absolutely count. The difference between the juice and the whole thing is the fiber, as sugarfish said. Sometimes I make what's called Energy Soup, and some call it Live Salad. Basically you puree the vegetables you want to eat with some water, just a little to get it going in the blender. Then you warm it in a saucepot until it's just warm, not hot. My favorite combination is avocado, kale, dulse (seaweed flakes), and red bell pepper. It's pretty orgasmic. And I get the fiber... [more]

It is extremely common for rootkits to replace ps with their own version of ps which does not show rootkit processes running, even when they are.

The fact that ps has stopped working twice for you should be a BIG RED FLAG. I would assume that some foreign software on your machine is replacing ps with a hacked version (which happens not to work at all - stupid hackers), and proceed from there.

Many electronic devices have an average failure rate described by the bathtub curve-- tending to fail either shortly after manufacturer or remaining usable for an extended period of time before failing due to component wear-out. The Tuthilltown Gristmill is making small batch whiskey from locally grown corn. Theorietically you're only supposed to change the name on your SSN records when you've already changed it legally. They probably assume that since many people change their names when they get married, that this is what you did and didn't require you to jump through crazy hoops. So yes the SSN change is not legal, it's presumed to be something you do after you change your name legally.

Ask MeFi post: What's in an Icelandic sprite's name
It's illegal to make up your kid's name, in Iceland. Icelandic children must legally be named an already-existing recognized Icelandic name. There is a big book, the Nafnabokin, that lists all of the permissible names.

This means it's possible to brute-force the problem. If you live near a big or university library, you could see if they have a copy of the Nafnabokin and look up all the permissible girls' names that start with Bjorn.

- side impact beams

Stuff like indash cd players, navigation systems, OnStar, extra sound deadening, power mirrors/windows/locks, alarm systems plus the larger battery and charging system to handle that stuff. More comfortable seats (especially in the rear), 3 point rear seat belts, child anchors and LATCH anchors, more powerful A/C systems that cool the car quicker etc. etc. all add a pound or two each. Your question is a variant of a question that mathematicians have to deal with all of their lives. Someone asks you to explain what it is you're working on and you do a better or worse job of explaining what it is, either way. Then, usually, comes the question "but why?"; "what is it good for?".
