MeFi post: "I want to put this whole business out of my own mind. It happened such a long time ago."
Before I switched to molecular genetics, I was a cytogenetic technologist for twelve years. I analyzed the chromosomes from cells in the blood, amniotic fluid and bone marrows of adults, children and fetuses. The most disturbing part of the job for me was receiving "Products of Conception" specimen obtained from a miscarriage. I had to sort through a bloody mess to identify and isolate the fetus to collect cells for the study. To this day I can't decide which was worst, finding a... [more]

I spend a lot of my time at work selling flowers to grieving families like a mom who just lost her 21 year old, or a Japanese elderly lady who just lost her best friend, or a grieving family whose soldier came home from the sandbox in a coffin.
To pull a stunt like this is so incredibly disrespectful to those who have something to grieve about-heck, I can't believe I wasted my tears on this and Lord knows this has been a rough year and those tears had other places to go.... [more]

MeFi post: Under Pressure
I have to say I was kind of heartbroken to find out the Marianas Trench was not actually much of a trench but just a spot where the ocean floor gradually went down and then back up again. I always had visions of those deep diving subs descending into a narrow canyon with steep walls on either side.

Facts can be jerks sometimes.

Ask MeFi post: Just eat lentils!
I like this recipe because it is tasty, healthy and delicious. Seriously I would eat it basically every day in the winter. It's good because it's a nice base and you can basically season it to whatever your tastes are and add a bunch of stuff to it, or just eat it as is. Keeps forever and you can make it vegan if you want/need to.

MeFi post: Real Life 30 Mins or Less
Hello. I live in Erie PA, and have for the greater part of my life. I worked at the PNC bank branch in question (yes, the one that was robbed by Brian Wells). Thankfully, I no longer have anything whatsoever to do with banking or finance, but there's a few things I'd like to share.

It's pretty damn crazy. In effect, it gives the cops an all-purpose, unfalsifiable excuse for kicking in doors without warrants. I'm not surprised at the ruling; but I'm a bit stunned that it was 8-1.

No, it's not crazy. It's a logical extension of the Court's Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. That's why the decision was 8-1. Everyone in the thread who is complaining about how this creates a loophole to Fourth Amendment privacy simply did not... [more]

I really don't think this ruling is as broad as people are making it out to be. The police in this case had a good faith belief that drugs may have been being destroyed because a) they were following a guy who just bought drugs from them, b) they had a 50/50 shot (there were two apartments the guy could have been in), and c) they smelled marijuana coming from the apartment of the defendant. Had all those factors not been present, the court may well have come to a different decision. It's... [more]

MeFi post: Criminals Are Stupid
I feel like there's a lot of misunderstanding going on in this thread. To hopefully clear things up a little:

1. Oral argument notoriously makes almost no difference at the SCOTUS level, which is part of why the allotted time is so limited. Arguments are made in briefs. Oral argument, if anything, is to allow the judges to eke out points that the attorneys either failed to make or failed to make clear in their briefs, but even in that respect it doesn't mean or do... The problem with monsters -- like the one who hurt Bill Zeller -- is that they usually don't look like monsters. My father was a minister, and before that he was a well-respected Army man, and through all the years no one (except my mother) ever suspected what he was doing. He was part of the system, and he made himself part of the system on purpose, so he could more easily conceal his deeds.

Salsa Chicken - so easy, so good:

Throw in a package of chicken breasts. Sprinkle with taco seasoning. Cover with jarred salsa. Cook all day on low while you're at work. When you get home, remove the chicken and shred it with forks, then return it to the crockpot. Stir in some sour cream and a drained, rinsed can of black beans. Voila! Perfect burrito filling. Or you can eat it over rice.

Ask MeFi post: Help me cook rice in OJ and chicken broth without burning it.
Ok, here's what I did, which worked great, and also the recipe, insofar as there's a recipe:

I cooked the rice floaty-rice style, a method an Indian friend taught me. I filled the rice cooker pot with water and added the rice. When the rice was cooked, I dumped the whole put of water and rice in a colandar. Voila! fluffy rice. The downside is that because I did this, I couldn't cook the rice in the broth and OJ.

I put everything else in a stock... [more]

How is that form of praise at all offensive, disingenuous, or reproachable? I truly think people are barking up the wrong tree with this particular criticism.

The praise is so effusive and personal as to be embarrassing.
