MeFi post: Music to Make You Move: Syncopation, Body-Movement and Pleasure
Count me in the camp that counts Happy as a little slice of contemporary pop genius. It's so very simple and so very clever at the same time. It does have a certain calm to it, it's not showy or bombastic. Just feels kinda lovely!

FYI. There are essentially just 3 tracks of "music" - programmed drums, 1 channel of bass and 1 channel of keyboards and the rest of the song is built from vocals and hand claps.

You can read the gory, geeky... [more]

Maybe you need to have just not heard all that much James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone.

I find that when I don't compare everything I encounter to the Best Version of That Thing, Ever, that I enjoy many more things, to a much greater degree.

Maybe I just like liking things.

Sorry, but someone not wanting to learn how to cook is very much deserving of scorn,

Jesus christ but this gets annoying around here.

Of course I know how to cook, and I am a self-sufficient human being. That is why, since I do want to bake bread, I cultivate vast fields of wheat, which I plant and harvest and take to my mill, which I built myself out of timber I chopped down and cut into boards myself, using hand-forged... Hmm. I've gotten annoyed at the free publicity the Internet gives Soylent before, and I've noted that Jevity, Ensure and Boost existed before, so let's give an algorithmic criticism of the reductionistic program of Soylent.

If you begin simply, you think about the chemical composition of food and the human ability to digest and make use of it. To begin simply is often a goal of engineering which leads engineers to dark places. Is the food-human system the complete set of... [more]

Well, it's not. But different things seem easy to different people. I honestly can't imagine why people can't google simple computer problems. It baffles me. But they can't, and I don't think it's pathetic that they can't. Different people are good at different things. And more fundamentally, they enjoy different things.

Cooking is like that. Can I cook?... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Do I owe my ex-wife this money?
I find it weird that she got the money, put it into the joint account and then immediately left (without the money). Combined with your statements minimising her contributions to the marriage (she worked - she wasn't sitting on the couch everyday!) I wonder if your attitude that she "owed" you this money gave her the freedom to leave a relationship that she felt devalued in. Not exchanging money at the time of the divorce when almost all jurisdictions that I am aware of would expect... [more]

MeFi post: Number Sense
It's actually a trick for squaring numbers ending in the digit 5. If "x" is the number to be squared, you drop the last digit and consider the remaining digit(s). Let's call that "y". Multiply y by (y+1) and add the digits 2 and 5 at the end of your result to get the answer.

The reason this works is that you're really multiplying x+5 by x-5 and correcting your answer. (x+5) * (x-5) = x^2 -25
which means
x^2 = (x+5) * (x-5) +... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Is this a red flag in my 3 month old relationship?
Since December you've posted four relationship questions and in all of them you demonstrate controlling behavior and ask for advice when women (not girls, please) don't act the way you want them to.

In every question you've written, you portray the women as manipulative and they string you along. You say very shallow things about them. I almost think you don't quite get how relationships work, actually.

Is this the same woman you were fighting... [more]

It would have troubles passing legal hurdles, but if it is true that the more robocars are on the roads the safer roads are in general, then I reckon the long view means that robocars should always protect their driver at the expense of others because that would make adoption of robocars more attractive and result in potentially quicker uptake.

I think that if you're capable of behaving decently when you're carrying, then you're probably capable of it when you're unarmed, and maybe what you need to work on is the sense of entitlement that makes you feel like you're allowed to be an asshole unless there's some potential dire consequence that could occur. Years of marriage have taught me that it's worth bringing up hurt feelings only if there's something concrete the other person can do. Otherwise, keep your mouth shut and try to forgive the person and keep your interactions with them positive, and you'll find that your feelings will change as long as the relationship is generally good. Because as you've pointed out, the hurt feelings are not necessarily their fault. And you need to accept that they're not always going to act the way you want... [more]
