MeFi post: Trump Tests Positive for the Coronavirus
Zeynep Tufecki, who wrote the Atlantic article linked above, explained on twitter:
Did you know that *study after study* finds most people don't seem to transmit COVID at all? That a small percent is responsible for almost all infections? That R is not that informative? My new piece on why this may be key to controlling the pandemic.
...
New paper from India, tracing ~500K contacts for ~85,000 cases. They did not find a single positive contact for 70.7% of... [more]

The fallout would be more likely to cause additional chaos than bring stability, but fuck it, I hope he suffers and dies. He is a fascist who has been openly agitating for civil war and denying the basic reality of a potentially deadly virus during a global pandemic (among other, worse things that I don't see discussed much anywhere). He deserved to catch it and he deserves to suffer and die. Over 200,000 other people have suffered and died as a direct result of his rank stupidity and... [more]

Per CNN just now, Trump skipped a planned conference call today, which Pence had to host in his stead. The subject was -- no lie -- senior citizens and the dangers of COVID.

Melania's tapes sound bad, but they're also full of just enough mixed messages for people to defend her on it, too. She's an objectively terrible person but her claiming she "tried" to reunite "a" family and how the media is mean to her is enough for people to cling to and make it a non-story.

And to be honest her disinterest in Christmas decorations is probably the most sympathetic moment she's ever had.

She's fully complicit... [more]

DNC Offices: Okay guys! We've been sitting on these Melania tapes since July. Nothing really big on them but they have Melania saying "fuck" in the same sentence as Christmas decorations. Oh? Yeah no she thinks the Christmas decorations are meaningless and wants to focus on the actual news. Yeah, yeah doesn't matter, she said fuck Christmas decorations basically. Well I guess she could come off as sympathetic and she seems to genuinely care about the kids and care for her husband but... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to deal with a critical/negative spouse?
I have watched my aunt, married for decades to a man exactly like your husband go from

a happy, bubbly, outgoing, interesting woman with lots of friends and family relationships

to

a ground-down, colorless, servile, nervous, jumpy mouse of a woman with no opinions of her own and an abject fear of displeasing her miserable excuse for a husband. He has isolated from her own family and her friends, expects her to do all of... [more]

MeFi post: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died.
Today while signing up for Where's My Ballot I learned that somehow I'm no longer on my county's voting rolls. Seventeen years at the same address, no name change, voter in nearly all elections - somehow I've been expunged.

An hour later I learned of RBG's death.

An hour after THAT I sent money to McConnell's opponent Amy McGrath, and contacted my local election board.

I mean - no. NO. We will not be silenced.

MeFi post: Built To Last
I was astounded by this article. I thought it was going to be yet another article on how some programmer with esoteric knowledge of an archaic language comes out of retirement to fix a legacy system. And it would be slightly newsworthy since its pandemic-related.

Instead, there are surprising takes on programming language origins and gender, government maintenance vs. consumer-based obsolescence as well as a surprise root cause of the problem.... [more]

MeFi post: is toilet paper wrong?
My wife and I acquired a bidet attachment for our toilet a couple of years ago. I can honestly say that toilet paper, and anyone who uses it, now seem barbaric and disgusting. To quote another bidet convert, "when you get poop on your hands, do you wipe them with a piece of paper? No, you wash them."
Trust me, you'll never go back.

Just toast until it smokes,

MeFi post: Trump, on Feb. 7: You just breathe the air and that's how it's passed.
“I have built a nuclear — a weapons system that nobody’s ever had in this country before,”

Apparently the W76-2 low-yield nuke (5–7 kt), although why you'd waste a 2-stage thermonuclear weapon on 7kt is beyond me. ( That's below the 15 kt of the uranium gun design of the "little boy" bomb dropped on Hiroshima. ), although thinking about it, if you just removed the secondary stage, then yeah, that would make sense to just use the fission... People who think that somehow the earlier release of these recordings would have had even the tiniest smidgen of an impact are as as dumb as Donald Trump.

Those who hate him will point out that he was denying publicly available knowledge in order to keep the stock market up.* This merely moves the needle a bit further away from the "Incompetence through Denial" and closer to "Malice."

Finally, the way black people suffer in the US is unlike any places I’ve ever been. I’ve been held at gunpoint by police officer in Miami. The chances of that happening anywhere else in the vast, vast majority of world—maybe 191 countries—is pretty slim.

Loved the Egg Paratha video. I buy these Frozen Malaysian Style parathas, and this looks like a wonderful addon when I cook that.

The usual Anda Paratha that I get from restaurants is the paratha wrap with a maamlette. This way of doing it seems better as the eggs are incorporated as a layer on the paratha itself!!

Tech's major problem is that it defunded journalism. As it happens, working societies need journalists -- if you can't manage what you can't measure, we fired all the people measuring society.

Half of journalism lost their job last year. HALF.

Of course none of this is "just tech", but it's a real effect, and we have to manage it.

MetaTalk post: California WIldfires AGain
We were supposed to move into our new home in Felton today. It’s now under mandatory evacuation. All of our savings went into this house. I spent the last three weeks ripping out carpet, replacing drywall, painting, upgrading the electrical system and so much more. It was our chance to get out of the East Bay and into a place in the redwoods that our children could grow up in. Today was surreal. There's already a Twitter account for that.

Personally I think he's doing God's work. The New York Times, the "Paper of Record", fired its copy staff in 2017, which has resulted not just in the hundreds of typos you see here, but also serious errors resulting from the loss of fact-checking and sub-editing that accompanies that... [more]
