FanFare post: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Love in the Time of Hydra
Best nickname I've heard for Real SHIELD™ is "OlmostSHIELD".
posted to FanFare by ZeusHumms at 9:35 PM on March 28, 2015
The existence of Real Shield bugs me mightily. Where were these guys when shit was going down with Hydra and the hidden alien city? Wouldn't Bobbi and Mack have told them that the entire world was at stake? Pretty sure an aircraft carrier's worth of firepower wouldn't have gone amiss at that time.

I would have much Real Shield being introduced by coming out of the blue to save Coulson's bacon, everyone rejoicing, and then Real Shield arresting him. Would have made for an... [more]

"Lieutenant, when was the last time I got your name right?"

"Never, sir."

Yeah, I <3 Talbot.

I would really like to believe that Bobbi has some other play up her sleeve than just quietly going along with this Real SHIELD nonsense. I don't feel like the writers have given her sufficient reason to feel that Coulson is compromised. I also feel like SHIELD, having purged itself of HYDRA, really ought to... [more]

Talbot was great all over this. Riding mowers, taco tuesday, his attempts to find the imposter. Great stuff.

No, the best line of the show went to Agent 33:

"But you seem so well-adjusted!"
posted to FanFare by leotrotsky at 5:15 PM on March 25, 2015
Agent 33 is pretty clearly going to end up as Madam Masque, right? They hit the phrase "the mask" several times while Talbot was running around, and also "masquerading."

"Glenn Talbot has the best dialogue of anyone on the show."
And it was a damn shame his monolog extolling the virtues of a riding lawnmower was cut short. One saddle indeed!

As a viewer who watched Mission Impossible episodes first run, I hate hate hate the stupid perfect mask trope. At least there's only flash memory for 3 faces, so maybe someone will be able to trick Agent 33 into overwriting Mae's face... or something,... [more]

Here for the "I'm gonna be up to my ears in Edible Arrangements trying making this one up to my wife" line. Glenn Talbot has the best dialogue of anyone on the show.

This was probably my least favorite episode of the entire series so far. It's one of those standard "introducing new plot elements" episodes that some shows do better than others. I likened it to a rebuilding year for a sports team; hopefully it pays off down the line but it's hard to... [more]

In fairness, the Marvel Universe has precedent for that kind of high quality decision-making.

I really don't understand why they put Miss Stabby-Hands on the index and gave her supertech finger traps instead of having somebody design a vibranium nail clipper.

The best headcanon answer I heard was that they DID remove her knives. Repeatedly. And she keept finding new ones to have attached to her fingers. Which really creeped her caseworker out.

But it was Manitowoc! He probably looked at all the places that Coulson had lived and decided that it was the one with the best name.

And I don't know if I'm giving the show too much credit, but the general ineptitude of Cal's 'Slicing Talons' fits pretty well with his poor planning and decision-making skills, which removed all the suspense for me, but truly, maximally, increased my enjoyment of this crazy cocoapuff.

Yeah, agreed.

I mean, I think Cal's encounter with the Eyeless Teleporter Inhuman (Gordon) at the end was meant to hammer home how much Cal... [more]

I'll be honest, I am genuinely loving Simmon's characterisation because the potential for an organic progression into villainy is right there.

FanFare post: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Who You Really Are
"I'm glad they haven't made us wait too long for reveals. Everyone knows about Skye after 1 episode."

That's a TV trope that I hate almost more than any other. I was so relieved that Skye's thing wasn't stupidly sustained over six episodes or something. And it seems like more shows are learning that audiences have limited tolerance for that contrivance -- my impression is that I've had this experience on several shows lately where I thought,... MeFi post: "Vanilla Latte for MegaFiller"
I'm a Ben, which baristas occasionally transform into Dan or Brent, or on one confusing occasion, Mark.

My bank - with whom I had been dealing for over a decade - once issued me a credit card with my first name listed as Bear. That was pretty badass.

Man I hate to threadshit but complaining about Starbucks employees is just the most petty and entitled class aggression bullshit imaginable. When I was a barista in a wealthy area, one regular, an attorney, called me by the wrong common variation of my name every day, often cycling between different wrong versions over the week (think 'Magda' and 'Madison' for 'Madeleine'.) It never occurred to me to correct her. It's a minimum wage job. You're on your feet for eight hour shifts cycling... [more]

FanFare post: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: What We Become
I was preparing to do what (much to my wife's annoyance) I always do in cases like this, which is to yell "JUST SHOOT HIM" at the TV whenever somebody has weapon and a big-bad nearby doesn't -- but Skye beat me to it, reminding me why this is one of my favorite shows. I am surprised that nobody has figured out what Rayna became; it seems like there should have been enough of a clue in those few frames to get at least a guess at her transformation.

I agree he's TOTALLY DEAD.

In the way that Marvel characters are totally dead.

Meaning totally dead for now.

(I am absolutely okay with this.)

I know that the people producing this show wanted me to scream with joy like an idiot when Skye shot Ward the way she did, but that does not take away the joy of that moment one bit.

Reddit's got a pretty good theory that Tripp isn't dead but is actually the Inhuman known as Hollow.

Terrigen Mists turning a bunch of people into superpowered Inhumans is a great way to get the metahuman count up to make the Civil War plotline work in the MCU.

And I think they've set up a very interesting Mac/Coulson storyline to come. Mac was very distrustful of Coulson after learning he had been under alien influence; now Mac has had the same experience.

I hope they set Ward up as a third faction leader. We've had A.I.M. in Iron Man 3, so they can use that property, for example. Putting AIM and Hydra in competition against SHIELD makes the strange bedfellows angle. Or they could keep him independent or start a whole other organization.

So, it's a single use temple city? One little bit of mist, and then the whole thing falls apart? Seems wasteful.

It might have less to do with the actual temple design and more with the fact that Skye's Terrigenesis apparently gave her earthquake powers.

Ack, no show until March? I have high hopes for Agent Carter, but I'm going to miss this show.

I know BJ Brett's availability was probably part of the choice to write him off, but boo. And Simmons is going to be very sad. But Mack has been freed from possession, yes?

Kyle McLaughlin needs to have some sort of special award created and presented to him. He is crazypants in the best way possible.

Skye just shot Ward! Just up and shot him!

I just realized that I left out poor, poor Eric Koenig.

Oh, and did anybody notice who played Skye's mother? Another Dollhouse alum, Dichen Lachman! I pay attention to casting news, but AFAICT the producers managed to keep it under wraps until I queued up the episode on Hulu tonight. I'll buy Chloe Bennet as the product of superior McLachlan/Lachman genes, even though in real life that kid would have cheekbones that could cut diamonds (no offense to Ms. Bennet).

Ah, but the thing of it is, with a few exceptions (Like S05's "The Body"), human life was always a pretty cheap commodity on Buffy. Vampires quickly become a less dangerous adversary if the writers don't let them snack on people (mostly nameless teen/20something extras) with a certain regularity. There's also a decent body count on AoS, but only a few that could be called "murder" in the typical sense; As a villain group, HYDRA is... [more]

I think Ward believes he is still playing some kind of long game - only now he's positioning himself as a SHIELD sleeper inside Hydra. Doesn't change his level of evil, but he might be the guy who is willing to do what is needed to get where he can really do some damage to Hydra.

Oh I'm positive he is going to help Skye reunite with Dad somehow, so he's not all bad. He'll continue to help SHIELD, while still being ruthless at times, so he'll stick... [more]

FanFare post: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: A Fractured House
The scenes with Fitz and Simmons reunited were just plain heartbreaking. It totally justified the inclusion of Fitz's imaginary head-Simmons (which I'd argue is an overused trope in genre TV these days) earlier in the season, which paid off here in spades as real-Simmons kept finishing Fitz's thoughts, but wrong. It's a good example of how to write relationship troubles that don't just revolve around one character being a jerk or there being a sitcom-level ironic... [more]
