looking for wide-toe-box-only sneakers (not 'zero drop')

Have loved Brooks Ghost for years, but would like wider toe box now. The rest of the sneaker is great for me. Have tried Altras, they're not better in that respect, and worse in others. Do not want 'barefoot' sneakers, nor 'wide foot' sneakers. Just the toe box.

What should I know about statin drugs?

YANMD. I'm about to be prescribed a statin drug because three years of lifestyle changes haven't lowered my cholesterol. In fact, my cholesterol has only grown worse. What should I know about statin drugs?

Unconventional "office toys"?

We're going back to in-person at the office (two days a week) and it's my first time in a while working somewhere where I get a desk! This is exciting and I want to celebrate with a fun thing on my desk. Something more unique (and less annoying) than a Newton's Cradle. What are MeFi's go to "office toys"?

Reliable reviews in 2022

Are there any sites (other than, I'm assuming, Consumer Reports) that currently reliably only write about things the writer has physically examined or tested themself? It's OK if items include affiliate links (I know web hosting costs $!) but ideally they wouldn't avoid reviewing items that can't be purchased using an affiliate link (e.g. something only available direct from a manufacturer's website.)

"I'll take famous fractals for $500..."

Wikipedia is notoriously complicated when discussing math-related topics but sometimes the concepts themselves are actually not that difficult when described in plain language. Let's talk about fractals, specifically the Cantor Set, the Sierpinski carpet, and the Menger sponge. Here's how they relate to one another, mathematically.

Dancing On My Own vs. Run Away With Me

I've been thinking about hard-driving pop songs I love and one of the things I've recognized is how much I love emotive but club-ready tunes that have a driving but expertly musically well-rounded vibe like e.g. Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Run Away With Me". That's a fuzzy definition but the key is: absolutely unstoppable pop production married to a lyrical vibe that has a stark emotional/narrative appeal.

Looking for the name of a posture technique

I remember hearing about an interesting set of exercises aimed at improving posture. Similar type of thing to Pilates or Alexander technique, but it began with a G. It sounded to me like a Hungarian-sounding surname. Anyone know what it might be?

Can you collect meteorite dust in your backyard? How?

I've been told recently that collecting micrometeorites is as easy, basically, as placing a clean surface outside and picking through the debris you collect because thousands of tons of space dust and debris fall to Earth every day. That can't be all there is to it, can it? How do you know whether you're looking at Earth dust or space dust?

Plant Watering While Away

I would like to find a way to water my plants without human intervention -- for about 2.5 weeks. I am currently trying out the method of using a wicking material placed in a container of water and then into the soil to slowly water them (as per google), but it doesn't seem to be working. Anyone have a method that worked that they could share?

I would like to be high without mind altering substances, please

In the past, I have enjoyed getting tipsy and was a happy drinker. I can not imbibe, and I have good reason to believe I can’t tolerate other substances, either. I would very much enjoy being able to get into that spacy dreamy place again, and from anecdotes along the years I suspect that’s possible through breathing techniques or meditation or chanting or … something. Just to be hyper extremely extra clear: I can not imbibe in ANYTHING. I’m interested in music or other experiences or practices that have helped you get to an altered state without putting anything into your body or fasting. I would like to spend some happy time in the clouds without creating any clouds.

How to temporarily get rid of cough for date?

Nearly effortless self care?

I have a disease that makes me achy, brain-fog-y and deeply exhausted when I am in a flare. Many of the things I used to do to feel better are no longer possible. For example, taking a walk, reading a book, even calling a friend. I'm looking for things I can do to make myself feel good and cared for on really bad days, but they need to require almost no effort physically or mentally which seems...impossible? Perhaps you can help!

Find this dress!

I saw a wedding guest with the most lovely dress & I didn’t get a chance to ask her about it. Can you help me find it? The details: floor/ankle length, dark sage field with dark dusty orangish floral pattern in velvet, backless, with a tie strap on one side and what looked like a spaghetti strap on the other. Low (but not below the breast) cowl neckline. Not looking for “here’s something you might like instead!” answers, I just want This Dress.

No show socks, grips, stay on your feet ,

I am looking for the pair of no show socks I bought years ago but I can’t remember the name. They are amazing. They do not come too high or low, which is just covering the toes or almost to the ankles which defeats the purpose. They don’t slip off and they have grips at the bottom. They came in a pack of 5 colours. The grip in the back has a big dot in the middle and smaller dots all around. The piece that comes over the instep is square cut and as I said does not come too high. It’s a nylon.

how to organize my inspiration/ideas digitally

i want a way to collect and search through all the artworks and other sources of inspiration i find but i can't seem to find anything that matches all my wants. preferably i'd like to find a website that already has everything i want because i'm lazy. although i wouldn't mind throwing something together myself and it would probably be better in the long term if i held all the files as opposed to relying on some other website.

Is Tufte still required reading in 2022?

The Visual Display of Quantitative Information was a landmark book when it came out. Does it hold up in this world where graphing and charting have become so ubiquitous ? I have a young friend who is taking an intro stats/data visualization class. I'm wondering whether I should buy them a copy of this book to set them on the path of righteousness. Is it too dated? Is there some other landmark book in the field that has taken its place?

Best shampoo for curly hair?

What’s your favorite shampoo for curly hair? I’ve been using DevaCurl low-poo shampoo and the matching conditioner, which work pretty well, but I’m out. My salon uses Aveda, which is *so* expensive, but...they’re $24 for 8.5 oz, and the DevaCurl is $24 for 12 oz...so also not cheap. Are there other shampoos I should be considering?

The answer is: “You should try Terry Pratchett”

I know the answer to my question as you can see by the title, problem is I have tried his work, I have read all of it. I need something to read. Please Metafilter you love to suggest discworld so I trust you enough to ask. What should I read now in Fantasy and or Science Fiction. I am well read in the genre and I want to avoid dystopias and good satire is welcome. The last things would be something newish (say within the last 5 years) and Different.

Looking for casual tops

I have plenty of t-shirts and work tops. I'm looking for tops to wear when meeting friends, going out to eat, a casual party, etc. when I want something a little more interesting. "Fancier" t-shirts or other tops, not too girly, sleeveless, short sleeve, or 3/4 are all OK. Size 6/8, small/medium, under $75, US-based. Would love some color, prints are fine too. Please presume I've looked at the usual suspects (Loft, Old Navy, Target, Lands End, etc.). Specific brands/websites/style recommendations appreciated.
