The Model Ship

Link is episode 1. As of 4 February 2024, he's up to episode 1887. Ron Calverley is a retired bus worker in Winnipeg who, after the death of his wife, decided to build a model ship like he had in his younger days. Actual model-making? Discussions of model-making infrastructure? LONG digressions about videography and computing? Classic old-man musings on life? ALL PROVIDED IN ABUNDANCE!

(disclaimer: I have not watched all umpty-zillion hours of his videos, so it's possible he milkshake ducks himself in some of them.)

He settled on the German battleship Bismarck, beginning by converting much of his living room into a mix of modeling workspace and photography studio. He actually begins building the model in episode 31, more-or-less finishing it in part 474.

He's since gone on to work on models of HMS Rodney, HMS Hood, and USS Iowa. He's currently working on the German submarine U-552.

Hey. I don't want you to think this post fell on deaf ears. I followed the link last night and ended up not only watching several episodes but also subscribing to the channel. This is exactly the sort of thing that made the interwebs fun twenty years ago, and I think it's the sort of thing that can make them fun again. Thanks for sharing.

We need more stuff like this and like the old-school blogs that made the web so interesting back in the day.

No worries; I knew posting this that it wasn't the kind of thing that suits water-cooler conversations.

Hey, that boy sure is Canadian! It's nice to see someone who'd probably agree he's an old coot doing all that technology stuff to get his macros working and uploading in 8k sometimes.

Otherwise... yup. That guy is sure building models!

one thing I love about these type of videos, about the craft, is the workshop. I really like looking at Craftsman's workshops, tools, even the artwork on their wall, and the other finished models or products.
and sometimes in these videos we/will see a person, a dog or cat or bird or lizard kind of walk through the set, really love that.

The sheer volume of shipbuilding videos is impressive, but there's a bazillion OTHER shop videos in the channel queue before that, pen turning and clocks and furniture and repair and general shop stuff (and unfortunately a number of videos about his wife's declining health). It would be a service if he could group some of these up in Channels or whatever the youtube chunker function is.

and yes this dude is VERY Canadian. Makes me smile.
