Oh, this is lovely.

I am having a really lousy day, after having a really really REALLY lousy day yesterday, and I think this is the first time I've smiled in at least 36 hours.

Thank you, bwg.

So it's true, there's more to ChatRoulette than just penis shots.

Yeah, surprisingly engaging and touching, not to mention her lovely smile.

I admit, I was ready to snark. But this was amazing and made me all smiley.

That was seriously cool. All done live, in one take. Nicely done. Just to make a random stranger smile. That is so cool. It's the opposite of Chatroulette Standard Operating Procedure.

So... when I saw the pizza box I was pretty sure something else was going to pop out of it, because it's chat roulette. But that was really nicely done.

I embrace technology and I embrace the internet, but this phrase makes me chuckle because I wonder what people would think 20 years ago upon reading this statement.

Honest question: What makes this different from gifting the girl a banjo?

Because in that askme question, the asker knew the girl. The chatroulette scenario was a random encounter.

Because it's fleeting, sweet, surprising, not intrusive... it's there-to-delight-some-random-person-and-then-gone.

Very much different to being sent an instrument because the sender fantasises about you playing it.

I wonder how many penises they sang to until they found her.

Also, that was awesome.

Oh, I so wanted to post this earlier, but I couldn't get past the feeling that it was somehow contrived. Seeing it again, though, I really don't care if the whole thing was faked; this made my world a more amazing place to live in.

This and the Thai girl. A nice evening of SLYTing. Time for bed.

This was adorable--the song, the response, everything. I couldn't stop smiling while I was watching it.

[side note: When I first watched this video, I noticed the number of views on Youtube was around 4000, but now, only a few hours later, it's 73,000! Go quirky Danish dudes!]

That was pretty great and funny. The Reddit thread, linked just above, was also way funnier than any other I think I've ever read there. And then towards the end I came to this: If you look around reddit, you'll find that we fucking type correctly around here. Use your shift bar, kid, or go back to AOL instant messenger. WTF is happening over there?

The chatroulette scenario was a random encounter.

I'm kinda doubting that. My guess is that they went through a whole pile of less attractive women before they found the one that they hoped was cute enough to help their YouTube debut go viral.

Power. On ChatRoulette, you know as much about them as they know about you. Both you and they can disconnect whenever you want and you'll never see them again, unless you want to.

When someone sends you an anonymous gift, they know who you are, where you live and that you've received a gift. You know they know all this, but you know nothing else about them. Some people, in some circumstances, find that exciting, but the power imbalance can also be very creepy.

The thing I kept noticing during the whole video was that she typed "diana" but it kept sounding like DEana to me when he said/sang her name. Is that a common danish pronunciation?

Cute video, though.

I am well aware of that. That's why I asked if that was a common danish pronunciation, progosk.

I thought it was very cute, and well-done, but I just assumed that it was, in fact, a real proposal video between by a very lucky nerd and his girlfriend. The setup would have been something like, "Honey, I need you to log on to Chatroulette at exactly 11:30pm. Don't ask me why, just trust me!"
posted by ericbop at 9:17 AM on March 16, 2011

Logging in to chat roulette would probably not set the right tone for most proposals.

Apart from which, the whole point of Chatroulette is that... it's a roulette: you can't choose who you're connected/confronted with.
By the same token, once the connection is cut, you cannot re-connect, whence the ephemerally tragic Chatroulette Missed Connections. No relevant posts for "Diana" there yet...

I thought something like this, too. Then, I thought there was some sort of subtle IP redirect hacking going on, where they redirected to a fake Chatroulette to insure this could go down. Still, pretty neat.

Some more background on Ruive05, Rune Iversen, the guy who thought up the whole thing, wrote the song and planned out the video; a making-of video and CBS interview are apparently upcoming. (Danish articles here, here and here.)

Don't they need her consent to post this? If so, either she stuck around afterwards or is it in the TOS for chat roulette?

I don't have a cam--and have seen enough penis, thanks--to go and find out.

Consent in the age of YouTube&Chatroulette...

It'll be interesting to see if she's found - a similar issue arose with singer2 on one of Kutiman's ThruYou tracks, to added effect/resonance when she emerged.

Were Diana to then deny her consent, as admittedly can still happen these days, it would still be another line to add to the narrative. All in all, Rune sure did his homework (AND struck it pretty damn lucky...).

Not only that, but how long must it have taken for them to find one named "Diana?" Imagine the odds!

Some more detail about the making of the video. Apparently it was the culmination of the Rune's thesis about viral videos.
