Shawarma Law

Shawarma Law. The Ed and Moe Show is a web comedy series from Dearborn, MI - birthplace of Henry Ford, home to the highest concentration of Muslim Arabs in North America (about 1/3 the population), and a target of ignorant crankery (previously). Well Ed and Moe have seen this kind of thing before. Co-creator Mike Eshaq doesn't want you to counter-protest, he's asking people to come to the Dearborn Civic Center Friday April 22 at 4pm to celebrate Shawarma Law. It's not Ramadan right now and there's nothing to be afraid of. If you can make it, come on up and share the love. Detroit Free Press coverage. Previous episodes of The Ed and Moe Show: 1 2 3 4.
Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly sent an open letter to Pastor Jones. Excerpt:

Haven't read the articles or watched the videos yet, but I can safely state that as a non-Muslim, I am wholeheartedly willing to follow Shawarma law.

For anyone in London: Al-Dar has the best lamb shawarma in the biz.
Shawarma Law does not discriminate against women! Mmmmm, shawarma.

Fun post, thanks McLir.
So interesting to learn about unexpected juxtaposition communities anywhere on the planet, like the Jews in China, the Chinese in Cuba, the Welsh in Patagonia. Gravity's Rainbow had my favorite examples of global combo hilarity and amazingness.
What lovely cojones these guys, Ed and Moe, have, in Michigan of all places.

Chechnya doesn't even have Sharia Law. 94% Muslim. USA: .8%.

LGBT rights is an issue I work on in politics. I find nothing to be more effective for changing minds than humanizing us. "Hey, we queers aren't the mincing pedophiles some politicians and pastors rant about (or frequently are)."
I think Shawarma Law is absolutely the way to go. "Hey, we aren't the terrorists some politicians and pastors rant about (and frequently are). Here, have a ZOMG delicious sammi."

Awesome. These guys are friends with my cousin (who is involved in the Improv scene here in metro Detroit) and I cannot say enough nice things about this project. In fact I am giving a final exam today in Dearborn just down the street from the Islamic Center where Rev. CrazyAss is scheduled to protest. I noticed a police presence there driving by but no Crazy (TM) as of 2:00 PM today.
Off to enjoy some shawarma on my way home from proctoring. One of the best features of commuting from Detroit to Dearborn for work is the bevy of enticing take-out options on the drive home down Michigan Ave.

While I'm not a fan of Pastor Jones:
from wikipedia
On June 1, 2006, Moscow-backed Chechen President Alu Alkhanov said he would prefer his republic be governed by Sharia law
and reuters
Earlier this month Chechnya’s spiritual leader successfully ordered the shutting down of all eateries during the holy month of Ramadan. Separately, many women said they had been harassed by men for not wearing headscarves in what some of the assailants said were instructions from religious authorities.
The Ramadan orders followed words of praise from Kadyrov who told state TV he was grateful to attackers who targeted women with paintball pellets in June for not wearing headscarves.

While I love my Constitution, the rights it acknowledges, and the government that is (kinda-sorta-mostly) free from religious encumbrances, if you offered my Shawarma law, but tied it to sharia law, I gotta confess, I'd be tempted.

It's not Ramadan right now
No, but it is Passover, you bastards. Did you think about Jews who are going off bread (including pita) this week? What the eff!? Now I am craving shawarma and it's going to be 4-5 days before I can even think about eating it.

Not only Passover, it's also Holy Week. And Good Friday is about the least likely day of the year you'll talk a faithfully observant Catholic into eating meat. If they're offering fried fish alongside the shawarma, though, look out.

I do some marketing work for one of the same institutions Joe works at. (Channeling Sarah Palin, I can see the Islamic Center from my job.) This morning a coworker offered me a chocolate Easter bunny and then began talking about that guy that burns the Toran.
Bless her heart, this is what I think a fairly good-sized majority of America consists of - well meaning but not particularly informed.
Anyway, I'll let you know if I stop by the Civic Ctr. after work to participate in the Shawarma non-protest.
Speaking of batsh*t insane, I read recently that Westboro was going to protest at Cape Canaveral next week. If someone wants to send me to the shuttle launch I will be happy to start a non-protest counter-protest.
