The song is adorable, but if you can't listen right now, it's still worth following the link just to read the full text of the song request (complete with a list of 27 of her favorite things about Ryan Gosling).

Run of the mill fan Tumblr Fuck Yeah! Ryan Gosling is created.

Posting on FY!RG uses the "Hey girl" construction. Gets popular.

Feminist Ryan Gosling created Tumblr based on humor stemming from the disconnect between "hey girl" and following up with academic feminist theory. It can be assumed Ryan Gosling isn't familiar with to the extent that the macros make it seems, so that helps the humor along. Gets popular.

People in other academic fields and professions think "feminism worked, why not my field?" Tumblrs proliferate.

Everyone else thinks "fuck it, anything goes as long as we stick 'hey girl' in there."

...and that's this Friday's Dissecting Gossamer comedy explication. Tune in next week when I explain why "underpants" is inherently funnier than "underwear."

Like all (or virtually all) youngish women librarians, I hate getting hit on at the reference desk. Last year I had a slightly creepertastic situation with a teenage patron who found my professional blog, and I grew to hate getting hit on even more. It's not just because the average library patron is not as pretty as Ryan Gosling! It's because the cute ones always seem to be working a "Hey girl I'm going to be super charming so that you will go way above and beyond the call of duty for me. Library policy is not a big deal, right?" kind of thing.

So. I am constantly fascinated by the way the kindness and understanding of Library Ryan Gosling is always just threatening to slide over into that kind of "You can waive that fine for me, riiiiight?" attitude.

And to think he got his start as the nerdy kid on Breaker High.

No word of a lie -- he was awesome on Breaker High. I wouldn't say 'nerdy' so much a needy jerk, but he did it exceptionally well. So well that you kept tuning in to see the needy jerk running circles around everyone else every day when you got back to your apartment from mind-numbing law school and just wanted to veg a bit and nevermind that it's totally age-inappropriate just anything to avoid reading more godforsaken textbooks. But that could have been just me.

I have ben educating my partner in the way of Gosling through the year and we have seen both Drive and Crazy, Stupid Love this fortnight. Tonight we were in the pub and I asked if she fancied seeing Ides of March, as the ad for the DVD was in the paper in front of us; she admitted she was coming around to liking a bit of RG. It was then I has to point out half of the picture she was looking at was George Clooney.

I like Feminist Ryan Gosling not just for the "hey girl"/feminist theory juxtaposition, but also because Ryan Gosling appears to actually be a feminist. I mean, dude used the words "misogyny" and "patriarchy" while criticizing how the MPAA giving Blue Valentine an NC-17 rating. I'm pretty sure I've never seen a movie that he's been in, but I like him for those comments alone.
