Cool satellite images of suspected terrorist camps in Afghanistan. I don't know about the commentary, but the pics are cool.

Way cool link... I especially like how they treat the subject... "zooming out" as they do: one step at a time, with illustrative comments.

Very impressive shots. I'd hope there is nothing but craters where those camps are now.

I find this disturbing:

Military buys rights to commercial satellite pictures

I guess it depends how strongly you feel about our right to know what is going on. Some won't see a problems with this. Other will.

Look now, because that's all we're going to get to see, folks! U.S. locks up rights for civilian satellite's pictures of war zone. posted by Carol Anne at 2:44 PM on October 16, 2001

Ground operations appear imminent.

I can't see much of a problem with the US buying up all the satellite imagery; there is a war going on, after all. Not to mention that the whole commercial imaging satellite industry only exists because of the DoD anyway.

I'm more interested in knowing how much they paid for it.

For those who are interested, you can find limited before-and-after pictures from the daily Pentagon news briefings at DefenseLink.

There is not a war going on, by the way. In order for a war to happen, congress has to decide on it, and war can only be waged on counties, not detestable methods.

This company did not have to agree to this contract. It was their choice to do so.

and war can only be waged on counties

The Barbary Pirates will be interested to hear that.

Well, considering how many satellites the military surely has *already* for acquiring imagery, I'm not so worried about them getting access to images from companies. Just helps them put more stuff together.

I suspect this is more about protecting Pakistan and other muslim countries from sat. pictures of US troops chillin' in their territory than anything else. That would make great TV on Al Jezeera.

But I thought Bin Laden was hiding in China. Actually, this is a very scary story.
