Mark Hamill: She lost a bet. Let's see two big buns on the side of her head!
Carrie Fisher: *&^% Your career is going to be over after this!

There's a charming follow-up to the sunbathing picture, when Carrie Fisher and her stunt double (Tracy Eddon) noticed the photographer a few seconds later (via AICN).

I love these--I came across a smaller collection of some of them a few months ago, but lost the link. Thanks for posting. I'm partial to the one with tauntaun, because it looks like a cheesy vacation photo (but on Hoth.) And the picture of Hamill and Guinness and the drids, because it looks like everyone just decided to chill for a while in the desert? And all of the ones with people eating. And all of these, really.

How is this not in the top 7, much less not anywhere in the other two?

Well, it took a while, but those mattresses have finally ruined Darth Vader.

Carrie Fisher looks like she is having more fun than anyone else. I propose she wins Star Wars.

She did that in the gold bikini (and it seems from these pics, in her Hoth clothes too).

And she tried to help improve the prequels.

Yay for Carrie!

Well from what we know about the shooting environment of the movies I'm sure Mark and Carrie were too busy being stoned out of thier ever loving minds to be grumpy.

In this link, scroll down to the picture of the woman in the knee-high boots (the picture right above the one where R2-D2's lid is flipped open).

This isn't Carrie (is it)? Is this one of the minor characters in the original Star Wars, in the scenes on Tattooine that got cut?

Is this the same girl looking through the binoculars, in the photo right above Carrie F and her beach ball?

HOWTO: skin a wookie
posted by brokkr at 4:21 AM on July 11, 2012

Correct, thermonuclear.jive.turkey, that's Koo Stark, one of Luke's group of friends on Tattooine who didn't make the edit. You can find the deleted scenes online if you search around.

[Hey, guys, if you are linking direct images from malgusto (not sure about the others), you need to know that those won't show up here for people who don't already have the images in their cache from visiting the page, apparently because of anti-hotlinking scripts from the site. We're getting display error flags on posts that are linking that way, so if your comment is deleted it's probably because of that. Maybe just link to the page and say something like "in the third photo."]

I tried to find similar photos for the prequels, but they're just a bunch of dudes typing on computers.

Great fun, thanks for posting.

I love that underneath those stormtrooper helmets, the actors were sporting big 70s do's.

Huh. And now I know that Treat Williams was a trooper, and the British royal family can play six degrees with Star Wars.

Carrie Fisher looks like she is having more fun than anyone else.

I listened to her autobiography last year while repainting some of our bedrooms. She was I think 19 during the filming of the first movie, and strikes me as a kid having a great time in Hollywood. (Yeah, I know about the addiction and the nutty family, etc.)

Does anyone know why Chewbacca's underperson has huge black eyes? Was it makeup? Or bruises? I couldn't tell.
posted by ChuraChura at 6:13 AM on July 11, 2012

Surely makeup, so you don't see pink flesh through the costume's eyeholes. See also various Batmans (Batsman?).

Yes, the photos were absolutely lovely to look at (I was young but I saw Star Wars in a movie theatre) but I just gotta ask, does Nokia need traffic so badly right now? (share price hovering at 1.50 euros)

You know, I had completely forgotten what an intense childhood crush I had on Carrie Fisher, but yup, it appears to still be intact. My older brother teased me relentlessly for getting a Rebel uniform Leia action figure ('You got a girl figure. Those are for girls!' Jesus, he really was a jerk.), but if he only knew the inappropriate prepubescent sexual feelings I had for that toy.

Maybe it is on the first 'here' (blocked by my corporate filter - category: adult) but my favorite of the old behind the scenes pictures is this one of everyone in civvies.

I first saw the Carrie Fisher/stunt double one a week or so ago. It's with a bunch of other photographs of stars with doubles, some more alike than others.

A bunch of these show up (and IIRC several originate from) the ongoing series of "Making-of" books by JW Rinzler. The books for ANH and ESB have already been released, and according to his Twitter feed, the first draft of the ROTJ book should be done soon.

On the one hand, these are run by Lucas for approval, so they gloss over some of the less savory stuff (though not entirely so), but on the other hand he gets access to some pretty cool stuff like the original handwritten notes that were the genesis of the first movies. He did one book for all four of the Indiana Jones movies, too.

I find the interminable fanboy mania for the Star Wars franchise pretty annoying, but the picture of Luke cowering over a bunch of mattresses is fun and yeah, that's R2D2 eating a sandwich.

One of Luke's other friends at Tosche Station (and subsequently, the cutting room floor) was Deak, played by Jay Benedict. He was also subsequently cast in Aliens as Newt's father, and then cut out of that film. Dude could not catch a break with sf franchises. I would like to start a rumour that he was also cast in The Wrath of Khan and snipped from that as well.

Lord, there is some truth to all that fanfic stuff with this one and I kind of screamed with Chewie being dismembered photo (yikes!)

It wasn't just boys crushing on the Princess. Man, I totally wanted to be badass Leia; not so much Jabba the Hutt's plaything.

I figure that Tatooine was really the Viet Nam or Iraq of the Empire- the stormtroopers either stay on base and rot; or they go out to patrol Mos Eisley and the Jawas plant IEDs, and people smuggle contraband droids right under their noses; or they go out to patrol the desert and get shot at by Tuskens, but they never catch them, so they go and burn down some poor bastard's moisture farm instead.

Who do you think supplied the drugs to Fisher and Hamil?
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 11:10 AM on July 11, 2012 [1 favorite]

I rewatched the originals recently, and kept being smacked by how very young Luke and Leia were, a thing that obviously didn't register when I was five, but now I was all, "Jesus! They're kids!"
That, and "Wow. Carrie Fisher's tiny!" She's, what, 5'1"?
posted by Mister Moofoo at 11:25 AM on July 11, 2012 [1 favorite]

And there was a great cry on the Internet: why isn't the photo of Carrie and her double a decent size for desktop wallpaper!

Is it? I don't think so. He appears to be a helluva lot busier than the other stars, and is probably having more fun doing it.

I actually managed to forget he was in Star Wars for most of that big Batman interview with him.

Carrie Fisher, on the other hand, was in Blues Brothers and then sort of disapeared, didn't she?

Carrie Fisher was in When Harry Met Sally, but she's also written several books since then as well.

Also, Carrie Fisher became a pretty well-regarded script doctor.
posted by devinemissk at 12:46 PM on July 11, 2012 [1 favorite]

She appeared in minor roles from time to time, she has a hilarious cameo in Heartbreakers which is a sweet little screwball comedy that no one saw, but she did write a bunch of screenplays and books and hung around the Beverly Hills set cause you can do that when your mom is Debbie Reynolds.

The books for ANH and ESB have already been released

For the Star Wars nerds amongst us, there's also an awesome book on the sound design of the movies that is worth checking out.
posted by photoslob at 2:22 PM on July 11, 2012 [3 favorites]

That would be worth having - the movies are such an intense audio experience, with dozens of distinctive sounds and music strains that do as much to tell the story as the dialogue and visuals.
posted by Artw at 2:24 PM on July 11, 2012

Oh, I have it, and it's 300 pages and 250 sounds worth of awesome. It's like a grown-up version of those books for kids where when you read about cows you can push a button and it goes "mooooo," but instead it has lightsaber hums and Wookie growls.
