A Pantone chart of German chancellor Angela Merkel's many coloured jackets

Looks to me like a number of these are exactly the same the jacket photographed in different lighting. The first four green ones, for instance.

Do powerful women like that just take the design of a jacket they like to a tailor or something and ask for it in every color? I guess in a way men do that too.

That's kind of fun. I am so not a fan of Merkel's policies in any way, but I like that she found a style that works for her.

You know in movies and TV shows when a stalker is revealed by a shot of a impromptu creepy shrine in their apartment. This is like that but for a stalker who is a very anal retentive designer.

Er... don't the two links have essentially the same content?

I must admit I find Angela Merkel weirdly charismatic, despite not agreeing with her on pretty much everything, and turning up in a lime green skirt suit certainly adds to the bad-ass factor. Plus, she's a physicist, in a previous life anyway.

As a guy with no patience for sartorialism I've always thought it must suck to be a woman of the same persuasion and be expected to do way more than wear the same thing every day.

Women's clothing is criminally lacking in pockets. Perhaps Angela has found that a jacket has a place to park a hankie.

Is Pantone launching some new marketing campaign, because this is the 3rd or 4th tumblr style "let's show the Pantone color of somebodies something" art-ish thing I've seen in the last week. It was a bunch of peoples skin tone the other day.

I don't think this is about Pantone's marketing so much as it is about bored designers and their blogging proclivities.

Pantone jokes have been a thing for a while. Tumblr just makes them easier to diseminate.

Some of the similarly colored jackets have three buttons, and some have four. The lapels differ on some of the jackets.

Though a few of these may be the same jacket under different lighting, they are, for the most part, different jackets. It makes efficient Teutonic sense to have multiple jackets of different colors in a cut that is flattering - and predictable. Throwing on a new jacket an hour before a state function only to discover that it makes you look like a hobo, or worse, shop Prêt-à-Porter - isn't ideal.

Shouldn't this Pantone chart contain Pantone numbers? The colors look different on each of my monitors! However will I reproduce them in print?

shakespeherian: " 'Yes I'd like one in light grey, one in slate, one in charcoal, one in grey, one in mid grey, one in silver, and one in silk grey.'"

Only 43 shades left and you've got a best seller on your hands.

Actually, if I had money, I'd do that exact same thing for pants that fit me right.

I was rather amused by 'Hitler' Merkel the other day... probably because it reminded me of Father Ted

Every morning I wake up and thank my feminist foremothers that I don't have to wear a zany colored blazer to work, and most likely never will.

It's laid out like a Pantone chart, but I was kind of disappointed to not see actual Pantone numbers. Unless Firefox ate that part.

Good god, I feel for the woman because she has a rack and that makes wearing tailored things hard, but 40 jackets and none of them fit her in the boobs. She needs to fire her tailor.

That way nobody cares enough to discuss what men wear.

Yeah, it does. But not as much as the hair and makeup.

Merkel's coat is elegant, it looks so fine. Tasteful style.

It's the ultimate in good design.

Of course. The Germany's economy is affected by a banking scheme at last. Time to sacrifice the leader. Making sport of her attire is phase 1.

Oh, I thought Merkel was the woman Bush tried to massage, but I didn't take the time to look to be sure!

Some men (usually middle-aged and older) do tend to be way too familiar with women — hugs, cheek kisses, little touches and pats — in a way they'd never be with a man in a similar professional setting, and I wish they'd cut that shit out right now.

I'm in a very different bracket, both in terms of income and professional status, but when I found a suit awhile back where both the jacket and skirt/trousers were comfortable and relatively low-maintenance (and affordable), I promptly went back and bought several more in a couple different colors. But all those colors were neutrals. Budget aside, to me, the brilliant thing about wearing a suit is that I don't have to think about matching colors. My shirts have colors, I don't want to have to match stuff in thee morning.

At first I thought she was crazy with the colored jackets... and then realized, looking at the pictures, that her shirts are pretty much all neutrals. Clever.

After she handled the unwanted massage, getting a tray full of beer spilled on her, and Berlusconi calling her an "unfuckable lard-ass," I can't help but root for things to be a little easier for her.

The beer thing is unwatchable... don't they have secret service people with bibs or something to protect her?

I recently saw a similar thing featuring Queen Elizabeth. It was quite pretty. She wears more blue than anything else evidently.

Given the number of German political events that seem to involve beer, I expect that by the time you get anywhere near being chancellor, you're capable of carrying on as usual drenched in beer.

(And, yes, there are German politicians who don't drink. The answer is fizzy apple juice, I believe.)

I don't think so actually. If you look at the larger image, the last 2 look to have a tweed or felt-ish texture.

I like this.

I love this one from the Putin series. I'm probably reading too much into the facial expressions, but it looks like Putin is picking up that the tough guy image isn't working on this one, and is reassessing the situation while keeping a cool exterior.

"Ms. Merkel has taken Ms. Schoenbach's advice to heart, exclusively wearing straight-cut pants and three-button, diagonal-pocketed blazers from the German designer [Bettina Schoenbach]. (...) Instead of overhauling designs each season, Ms. Schoenbach uses new fabrics and colors to evolve her collection. Ms. Merkel's classic suit reflects this strategy, whether black wool for a speech before the German Parliament, violet velvet for a Paris meeting with the former French president, or tan with black trim for an EU summit in Brussels."
