Cool. I just read about this iphone app that allows you to make your own SMAs and I can't wait to try it.

Some good things there.. I agree with his take on Yuriy Norshteyn's bit. That has been one of my favorite pieces of animation for quite awhile.

Street of Crocodiles is one weird movie. I remember seeing it about 20 years ago... weird, weird, weird. It's the Eraserhead of stop-motion animation.

Alas, Street of Crocodiles appears to have just been DMCA'd due to a claim by Zeitgeist Films, Ltd.

My favorite stop motion animator is Pes. He mostly uses food and various objects, but makes absolutely beautiful films from them. My favorites are Kaboom and The Deep.

Fresh Guacamole on that Pes page is just great.

I agree with his take on Yuriy Norshteyn's bit. That has been one of my favorite pieces of animation for quite awhile.

Hedgehog in the Fog is great, but four years later Yuriy Norshteyn made Tale of Tales, which is even more marvelous and brain-tickling than Hedgehog and has actually been voted 'best animated film ever' in multiple critics polls (more). Have you seen it? If not, you're in for a treat; I think the Flavorwire listicle-maker kinda missed the mark in prioritizing Hedgehog over it.

Seems like the place to mention Bruce Bickford.

Who exists on a plane all his own.

And who defines, through his very existence, the word "painstaking".
