The credits especially were awesome. posted by kmz at 11:24 AM on March 11 [5 favorites]
If this were really Westeros, when Renly bit that apple sweet juice would have run down his chin and over his fingers because NOBODY IN WESTEROS KNOWS HOW TO CHEW WITH THEIR MOUTH CLOSED APPARENTLY SERIOUSLY WHAT IS THEIR DEAL.
Anyway, yeah, that was way better than it should have been. Thanks. posted by davidjmcgee at 11:25 AM on March 11 [4 favorites]
I cringed as I clicked, knowing it would be pretty lame.
More reflectively - what helps it work is that they don't bend too far backwards to make the characters and conflicts actually mirror the original material; Daenarys can sort of hang out with the Starks, and Stannis can be younger than Renly, because that happens to work better.
Also that intro sequence with the notebook is, if you'll forgive the language, sweet as fuck. posted by Tomorrowful at 11:31 AM on March 11
Oh sweet, that's Ashly Burch in the world's worst blond wig. posted by figurant at 11:31 AM on March 11 [1 favorite]

I'm betting someone's going to spike the punch at the prom with dragonfire. posted by Catblack at 11:42 AM on March 11
Is this connected to the same folks doing The Lizzie Bennet Diaries? They've got a couple of the same actors, and "Game of Gourds" was one of their ongoing jokes. posted by Diagonalize at 11:43 AM on March 11 [3 favorites]
The intro was sweet, and besides the wig, Daenerys pretty much nailed it with those wide eyes. posted by sparklemotion at 11:43 AM on March 11 [1 favorite]
I would watch a whole movie done in the style of those opening credit, with that fluid ballpoint-on-notebook-paper animation. That was awesome.
(Full Disclosure: I haven't read or watched a bit of this story yet, aside from maybe the first twenty or so pages of the first book. I just can't commit to ten thousand pages of epic/betrayal/blood, so I am saving the books & show until, uh, after I retire?) posted by wenestvedt at 11:45 AM on March 11 [1 favorite]
I'm good friends with the director! If you guys have any questions, I might be able to get him to answer! posted by chatongriffes at 11:46 AM on March 11 [1 favorite]
I hear that school has a really high expulsion rate.
I'm a bit embarrassed that they had to spell out the Starks' love of vintage for me to clue in, but it was smart of them to do it. posted by ODiV at 11:50 AM on March 11 [2 favorites]
chatongriffes, my only question is: When is episode 2? posted by rebent at 11:52 AM on March 11
I just can't commit to ten thousand pages of epic/betrayal/blood
It's not all epic/betrayal/blood.
There's also the incest. And the rape. And at least implied rapecest. posted by ROU_Xenophobe at 11:54 AM on March 11 [4 favorites]
wenestvedt: Just watch the show.
I say this as someone who read the first book and liked the experience of watching the first season much better (it really is a good show), and who has friends who have read the whole series thus far and have all told me just to watch the damn show.

Any day now Martin will announce that GOT was just a test run of the generative fiction algorithm he's developed and now licensed to all the major content producers. Soon, every book you read, every program you watch will be Game of Thrones InsideTM. posted by ennui.bz at 12:01 PM on March 11 [1 favorite]
I loved this. So true that Houses (and Fiefs, and Kingdoms, and Teams, and similar "adolescent" communities) are very like high school cliques.
Had to snort at quite a lot of this, too. Makes up some for all the horror and tears involved in reading all the books. posted by bearwife at 12:15 PM on March 11
The only thing that separates this from the dreaded f-word ("fanfiction") is money.
No, it's just straight fanfiction. Which is cool.
And yes: the whole thing was very good but that credits scene was fantastic and whoever did it should be very proud. posted by jeather at 12:47 PM on March 11
OK, OK, I just requested the DVDs from my local library. But this better be good.... posted by wenestvedt at 1:06 PM on March 11 [2 favorites]
It'll be fine, wenestvedt. The author, GRRM, is a troll and a terrible authorperson but the people making the show seem to be able to work around that pretty well. posted by laconic skeuomorph at 1:24 PM on March 11 [1 favorite]
Needed more Tyrion, and the Starks needed a little tomboy sister but still, that was way better than I expected it to be. Yes, the intro was a killer and yet another example of how the intro to that show has become so iconic. posted by Ber at 2:17 PM on March 11

Dany and Jon Snow getting it on is a bit alarming, but that's because I'm assuming Dany is Jon Snow's paternal aunt. So actually I guess it fits right in with the rest of the books. Never mind. posted by davidjmcgee at 4:46 PM on March 11

Were peaches out of season? Because, otherwise perfect.
Yeah, that sure was a crunchy peach.
I'm assuming Dany is Jon Snow's paternal aunt.
Aw, R+L=J is so old! To anyone who has actually read the books, it's obvious that Jon's real father and mother are Howland Reed and Catelyn Stark. It's just so obvious! posted by Soulfather at 5:29 PM on March 11

Re Renly's crunch. I'm pretty sure that was neither an apple nor a peach but a nectarine. That Renly/Loras prom poster makes me swoon (for a moment I thought they were cosplaying Kirk/Spok on it, because their stag-pins looked like communicators to me. I'm a dork)

Cute. I like those trailer re-imaginings better when they either match or parody the actual content of the show, though. This one doesn't really do anything but pick out shots of people smiling. posted by restless_nomad at 2:48 PM on March 13
The second episode didn’t quite click with me like the first one to be honest, but this “finale” I enjoyed a great deal again.
Some shit is really subtle. I mean, Varys giving Petyr the finger from the crowd, mysterious Tyrion <3, and at the end Jaime “last chance for honor” Lannister saved Sansa from Littlefinger. That’s pretty deep for a web-parody. posted by ZeroAmbition at 11:50 AM on March 25
