To be fair, The Big Lebowski is basically a supercut of John Goodman losing his shit.

When the cops finally come to collect me, I'll just be surrounded by a vast landscape of ruination, muttering "calmer than you, man... calmer than you."

I'm a little disappointed that the scene from The Big Lebowski where he smashes up the car wasn't the censored basic cable version, because the altered dialogue always cracks me up.

This is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps.

His Polyphemus in O Brother Where Art Thou? (@~2:50) is one of those scenes that just sticks in my memory. The sudden transition in that scene...

I want nothing more in life than to see him in the role of Ignatius J. Reilly in a film version of Confederacy of Dunces.

I like to think the brief Nick Cage appearance in this is an effort to give it canonical connections to Nicolas Cage Losing His Shit.

Don't forget, he can sing, too!
"People Like Us" from the movie True Stories

His physical size makes him really scary when he wants to be.

Aww crap, I shoulda read selfnoise's fine print before posting! :-)

This was fun, thanks for posting.

BTW, what's the movie that has the gritty feel and Goodman's glasses are taped up? I didn't recognize it and it looks interesting.

That scene from Barton Fink never fails to give me the chills.

Man... he has had a varied career. There is a lot I like Goodman in. And I mean A LOT. But he has had quite a lot of WTF roles as well, and they are not all 1970s era "Jailbait Babysitter" stuff.

Aw, John Goodman is a sweet man, he's just Louis the Dancing Bear. Can't find that clip from True Stories, but here he is singing People Like Us sweet and sincere.

Well now, wasn't that vicariously cathartic.

I still love to yell at people about what happens when they fight a stranger in the dark.

Probably my favorite scene by him ever. So funny and sad. Here it is:

I like sad songs, they make me want to lie on the floor.

There's a lot of timeless stuff in that movie.

I want to sincerely thank you for posting this. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise, and I was in the sort of fucked-up grumpy headspace where only viewing John Goodman scream "I WILL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND I WILL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND" would alleviate my lack of inner peace

Here's the list of films, but...it's in alphabetical order. I'll start by ruling out The Flintsones.

The taped-up glasses version of John Goodman is from Death Sentence

Thanks dustym, that's an awesome scene (Swoosie Kurtz!), but it's not quite the one I had in mind. There's an earlier scene where Goodman and his buddy are at the country and western bar, and he's just sort of psyched himself up. Maybe it's single's night. And he swaggers out and says "I'm Louis the dancing bear!" with this big sweet goofy grin, just doing his earnest best.

Goodman's a really talented actor. I think True Stories was his first leading role, but I suspect it's Raising Arizona that really put him on the map.

John Goodman loses his shit pretty well in Red State, too. (Just after 2:05 in this trailer.)

Ooooh right Nelson. I can only find a few True Stories clips on Youtube, which is too bad. I love that movie.

Raising Arizona is one of my favorite movies. I think I've watched it at least 30 times.

This would be so much better if the clips were labelled. Giving them in alphabetical order is sadistic.

But oh, that moment of lost control with terrible, irrevocable, permanent consequences. One man twisting the universe. Existential terror.

Not sure why. This is what the Dude says about his bathroom decor after his head has been pushed down the toilet by the guys looking for the other Lebowski.

Perhaps the lack of context caused the flagging. The quote in its entirety:

"My... my wi-, my wife, Bunny? Do you see a wedding ring on my finger? Does this place look like I'm fucking married? The toilet seat's up, man!"

eah, I was astonished to see that the whole cut was under five minutes. Lebowski would be good for at least about seven on its own.

And this was my sole purchase at my first visit to The Little Lebowski shop in NYC. Normally I have no use for that meme, but I made an exception for this.

My opinion is that John Goodman outclasses even DeNiro as an actor in skill and range and the only reason that he's not widely considered so is because he got his start playing an overweight working class guy on a TV sitcom. He was typecast as Gleason from day 1.
