Cosby also received honorary Utah citizenship

I never really considered myself a citizen of my state, just of my country. I have a greater affinity for my city and my country than I do for the state.

More Jell-O hijinks with Bill can be found here.

Not surprisingly, Salt Lake City has been No. 1 in Jell-O consumption for years based on sales figures, with the exception of a recent few months when Utah played second dish to Iowa Jell-O eaters.

Many credit the large Jell-O consumption in Utah to the local LDS culture, which has turned Jell-O making and molding into an art form by mixing the boxed dessert with various fruits, vegetables and creams.

Cosby believes international visitors to the 2002 Winter Games will come to appreciate that cooking craft.

"You're going to show the French something they have never seen before," he said. "You're going to show them lime Jell-O with shreds of carrots in it."

Lime Jell-O with shredded carrots. Really. He's not joking.

"on another note: "The Beehive State"?"

o2b: Look at the picture in your link. See the woman just over the Lieutenant Governor's left shoulder?

It's all her fault.

It's too bad that the SLC Olympics are in the winter and have no equestrian event.

Yeah, I remember Jell-O holding a huge promotion here in Des Moines, IA just like this one. It's odd to see lawmakers get excited about gelatin, and cringe at raising teacher's salaries.

ok. i grew up mormon, and jello was quite common. True. Especially with fruit or carrots or whatnot included. Called it "fruit salad". Why? i don't know.

Just got this from a Mormon coworker:

There is actually a cultural reason for that.

The "Relief Society" is the oldest women's organization in the US, established by the prophet in Kirtland, Ohio in 1831. Every mormon woman is a member. They take care of the sick, needy, etc -- they take a lot of meals around, and they throw a lot of banquets. Wherever women congregate, there are decorations and food. Jello somehow got locked in as one of the dishes that MUST be present at all relief society functions.

(Remember -- when it first came out, it was considered a REALLY CLASSY dessert.)

yes, but what's their position on Jell-o shots?

also, the word "Utahns," just strikes me as hilarious, It sounds like an evil alien race from Star Trek or something.

That Bill Cosby! What a refreshing rags to riches story. A long way he has indeed come!

jonmc, the joke goes "If people from Utah are Utahns, what are people from Tampa?"

Don't we have something better to focus our time on (state legislators included)?

Can't find a Web reference, but I recall that a young Bill Cosby pledged, back in the 1960s, to quit comedy after a few years and work as a junior high school teacher. Jell-O pays better, I guess.

So, tying this in with this, does that mean the new Dead Kennedys don't have any Utah shows coming up?

As a current Mormon, I can say that Mormon culture is full of self-referential humor, much of it revolving around jell-o. It's like a long-running inside joke.

Maybe that's the same reason why Utah (I do not live in Utah) could elect Orrin Hatch...
