Meet Ulf. He lives north of the Arctic Circle and makes boat. He swims daily (brief male buttock shot), does household chores, and relaxes. Ulf is content. [10 minutes, Vimeo]

I want to go to there.

Though I'd probably want a sauna after that swim.

Dip Flash: I counted two buttocks.

I suppose it was inevitable someone would make a cheeky comment

I do not live north of the Arctic Circle and I am not content. I'm not sure to what extent they are related. I would like to be content.

Seconding carter!

This was pretty lovely, and makes me want to go back to Norway.

Ulf's website is here, with a little more about the kinds of boats he makes, the book he wrote, and lots of pictures. I would not say Google Translate really helped, but the pictures are great.

Ah, traditional wooden boat building. Unfortunately it is not a job anymore, an art project or a historical demonstration supported by a foundation. I have added him to my list of purchases soon after the big lottery win. He certainly builds incredibly beautiful boats!

Good find. His website links to his Facebook which has some whoa pictures such as this.

Beautiful...look carefully and you will find a recipe for roast reindeer. That was a nice touch.

I was a little surprised to see the extent of the forest in his area above the Arctic Circle -- I would have thought he would have been near or past the tree line. If, like me, you're curious, Wikipedia offers an explanation regarding northern Norway:
The North Atlantic current makes Arctic climates in this region warmer than other coastal locations at comparable latitude. In particular the mild winters prevents permafrost.
and lists the tree line latitude for Norway as 70 N.

I understand well the statement about effortless rowing, feeling the boat as part of your body. Another version of the lap strake boat, a St. Lawrence skiff in my case...

If all you have known is fiberglass and Aluminum, seek this out.

Am I the only one who got like 30 seconds of Ulf and then a 10-minute Claritin ad?

I feel compelled to add that the name Ulf means wolf, which just makes it all the more ... Norwegian.

What a gorgeous wee film. Added to my list of things to watch when it's all a bit much.

This, this is the loveliest thing. Ulf and Ingvild playing music in their wooden house.

Between this and the Antarctic base video recently - I may have to reassess my life and save up for a new one in a cooler calmer climate.

I've sailed right by this island/town in summer! Now I am homesick for the place where there's no day for several months. And it's so cold that everything is cooked with butter just for the calories.
