Larry Kramer’s The American People: Volume 1: Search for My Heart: A Novel (previously) is now on the shelves.

Kramer says the title of the book, almost 40 years in the making, “comes from that speech by Reagan which really did hit me, where I knew he was talking about ‘the American people,’ and I knew that I was not part of that crowd that he was talking about." And he insists that he would have preferred to call the book a work of history instead of a novel: “People say, ‘Can you prove to me that George Washington was gay?’ and I say, ‘Can you prove to me that he wasn’t?’”

Reviews have been mixed.

Larry Kramer in Love and Anger, an HBO documentary, will air this June, when Kramer turns 80.

I can't tell you how excited I am to read this. I met Larry Kramer at the Tony Awards gala a few years ago, and it was the highlight of my life. He was so kind and generous to me with his time.
