This shouldn't need to be said but since it too often does, I'm keeping his name handy for the next time someone implies that Muslims support terrorism (or are not the most common victims of these extremists):
His son had stopped by the mosque at about 5 p.m. for prayers on his way home from work

My initial reaction to this was that what Adel did was a singular act of heroism and that I could answer escabeche's comment with an easy "no way". But I've been thinking about it since then and there's a possibility that if for example my kids or another family member were in the mosque then I may have done something similar. It may not be a high possibility because I really do not want to die, but throwing yourself in front of harm to protect family seems to be a more common thing.

Now Adel had just finished praying at the mosque and there is a good chance he had friends, or at least acquaintances there, and even if they were complete strangers they were still people who just moments ago he was praying side by side with, so he had a connection with them and would not want to see them hurt. When we pray we stand shoulder to shoulder so that we are touching those beside us. We prostrate ourselves before god together and we try to move in unison with each other. It is more than being members of the same audience, we participate and act ourselves, which is why I say there is a connection.

So with this in mind I'm not saying that you or I would definitely do what he did, but at the same time it shouldn't be too surprising because it is a very human thing to do, just as running away for our own safety would be. We should be proud of his sacrifice and celebrate it, but at the same time I think it would be good if we could think of it not as the acts of some hero or superhero, but as the acts of a person like you or me with the same daily concerns, and keep ourselves open to the possibility that we too could act to help our fellow humans should the need arise. Look to the helpers yes, but be aware that helpers don't need to be other people, we can be helpers too.
