That Don McLean didn't know from tragedy. The day the music died?

Try the fucking year all the music died, Don. All of it, Don.

And Percy Sledge this month, too, on the 14th? Damn, y'all.

Ring of protection for Joni, yes? Or something!

At this point I'm getting numb.

The legends are passing. Bring on the new legends.

Wow...I discovered Lonnie Mack soon after I fell in love with blues music at a young age. His influence could definitely be heard in many '70s and '80s blues rock guitarists. In fact, Stevie Ray Vaughan was pretty much an amalgam of Lonnie Mack and Albert King.
He was a huge talent.
Fun fact: Lonnie Mack played bass on the Doors' Roadhouse Blues.

Then I obviously read the BBC's news site wrongly, Radiophonic Oddity. Thanks for the correction!

Check that duet with Mack and Stevie Ray (the "role model" link in the FPP).

Notice Stevie Ray Vaughn spends most of the number nervously watching his own hands.
Notice Lonnie Mack spends most of the number bemusedly watching Stevie Ray's face while he rips one blazing solo after another.

Not taking away anything from him, but - SRV stood on the shoulders of giants to keep building the mountain. One of those giants just fell.

Every white boy who played the blues learned from Lonnie Mack. Even if they thought they were learning from some other guy, that guy learned from Lonnie Mack. His playing was so accessible, so open, that once you knew a little about first position A, D and E it was easy to figure out what he was doing. He didn't hide anything behind flashing fingers, or chord alterations, it all made perfect sense. So clean. So clear. So concise. Such punch. I learned from listening to Lonnie Mack's records over and over again in the '60s. There are guitar players I spend more time listening to now than I do Lonnie Mack. But nobody laid it out so clearly, guitaristically, (if there is such a word,) for us guys back then from the city who didn't know a hoe from a row, than Lonnie Mack. I marvel every time I hear him again.

Well god damn. As a guitarist Lonnie Mack was a god to me. Talk about someone whose influence is greater than his name recognition . . . He was a transcendent musician.

What the fuck 2016.

I was going to suggest we start making FPPs on people who aren't dead yet, bit, at this rate, that actually might be more difficult.

Ashamed to admit that I'd never paid attention to Lonnie Mack's music before now. Listened to some of his music this morning instead of indulging in yet more Prince than I'd ever indulged in the years before his untimely death. Lonnie Mack was amazing, and what a voice. Transcendent indeed.

blucevalo, glad you listened. That's why I post about music. If you like Lonnie, look into Roy Buchanan.
