The Dallas World Aquarium is one of the eminent tourist destinations of Texas. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums through 2017, the aquarium has recently come under scrutiny owing to some of the more cavalier acquisitions and future plans of its bombastic owner, Daryl Richardson.

We've been there. It's pretty gross. I think we left when we realized that the bird enclosure was full of rats eating the food.

It's not a nice place, or at least isn't a nice place unless you want to see a lot of rats.

“If every zoo ran like his does,” a former employee told me, “there would be no animals left on the planet. It would be sucked dry.”

Heh. I was saying 'weren't those the awful people that tried to kidnap the pygmy sloths', and clicked on the story and there it was in the subhead.

I have trouble taking AZA seriously as an animal welfare organization seriously when they will strip credentials from zoos for sending elephants to sanctuaries, but will happily allow zoos to sell to circuses and allow shitholes like DWA in. Some individual zoos are great, but AZA isn't run for the benefit of animals, it's run for the benefit of businesses (some of which are nonprofit, but are still businesses.)
