Forget Alien vs. Predator, I want to see Housecat vs. Predator

Thermal Imaging Cat Video, featuring Lekki and Leo [CC]

Tampere, Finland's own Lauri and Anni Vuohensilta, creators of the widely popular YouTube sensation, the Hydraulic Press Channel (Previously on Metafilter), have branched out with a new spin-off channel, Thermal Guys, starting out with the internet's favorite subject matter, cats.

Cats are aliens plotting our demise at all times. Until then, they are content to receive treats and purr and occasionally knock stuff off of high shelves onto hard floors.

The thermal effects are neat, but the real stars are Lauri and Anni, who are perfectly adorkable.

Also, WRT Predator something that's always bugged me: OK, Arnie supposedly figured out that the Yautja could only see in infrared when he was covered with mud and hiding in the roots of a big tree. But wasn't Arnie pretty well visually camouflaged as well? Here's the scene--you decide. (I loved the bit in the sequel where the whole plan of Gary Busey's men-in-black squad for capturing the next Predator relies on their belief that wearing insulated suits would basically make them invisible to him... and the Predator just starts flipping through frequencies in his built-in goggles, and can see them clear as day.)

Cats are fine but this video, like most videos, would be much improved with lansigootanmaanpysytkorvan.

Oh my god. They are SO not who i expected to be behind the hydraulic press videos. I pictured someone much, much older, mostly because presses aren't cheap and i wouldn't expect someone so young to have one laying around, but i guess there's not a lot of old guys who would want to crush such a wide array of things AND post to youtube. They are adorable and i could listen to them speak their heavily accented english all day. I honestly thought it was an old drunk Russian guy this whole time.

That was pretty neat.

As an extra bonus, I fell in love with those curtains.

One of the videos shows Lauri hitting the brakes hard on his bike. After a short downhill the disk brakes are hot enough to boil water. I can tell you from personal experience that you can get them red hot from modest braking on a long downhill.

That one blown pixel on his camera had me checking my monitor.

Interestingly enough, their other spin off channel, Beyond the Press has a video of Lauri hitting the brakes hard, but with a car they bought on the cheap specifically for YouTube destruction purposes. The results would make Michael Bay quite happy.

(Whenever a YouTuber has to make note they caught their GoPro on fire, you know you're watching a fun video.)

Nature agrees, & prefers to use temperature-sensitive melanin metabolism for thermally imaging cats!

Which means that if you take a siamese, shave your initials into a light spot, and then strap an ice pack over the bald spot while the fur grows back, the initials will grow back dark to give you a monogrammed cat.

Last time I posted about that little tidbit, someone asked "Is that really a thing?"

Initially my reply was "Probably not," which I later had to change to "Yes, it's a thing".
