The Pet Collective strikes again, the same folks who brought us Things Cats Don't Like. In the hours since they posted the funny birds, they gave us mammal-lovers 17 Funny Puppy clips (with a lot more than 17 puppies). I have no objection to regular periodic MetaVisits to the PetCol.

Maybe it's because I watched it with the sound off, but this was... kind of creepy and sad? I mean, it looked like all the birds shown had their wings clipped, and then there was that one kid going around widdershins on a broom a dozen times and circling past some sort of weird headless child bride manikin standing on a table every time and honestly if the whole thing was subtitled "[endless screaming]" it would come as no surprise

Birds are indeed awesome. Wing clipping is for their own safety. If done correctly it will leave enough lift to cushion a fall but not enough for them to fly out a front door. Or into a ceiling fan. The only thing that made me sad was the poor birdie at the end who is plucking. They pluck their own feathers out due to a behavioral issue. It usually means that they are bored or sad.

I know lots of people who keep birds and love them, but I've always found it inexplicably sad.

Did we watch the same video? Because she was clearly going deasil.

Keeping animals will always be terrible and anthrocentric, but also delightful and hilarious.

MetaFilter: yeah, it writes itself.

Oh, man, birds are amazing in a "you are really not a mammal, are you?" kind of way. I'm now again missing my sweet departed blue-headed Pionus, Bucky.

Caring for a parrot or other intelligent bird (see recent FPP about crows) is such a responsibility. I adore them and have come to recognize I'm not capable of providing one with the environment and attention they need.

I succeeded!

(and am I wrong or is this just packaging up and branding other people's content?)

The chains around the slaves legs is to keep them safe! We cant let our captives go try and get out of the nice cages we put them in, they go might hurt themselves!

Im not some crazy foaming at the mouth animal rights activist or anything, but the idea of keeping pets has always been bazaar and disgusting to me. I guess on some fundamental level I dont see humans and other creatures as different. Why can I trap and enslave a horse, but its wrong to do it to apes?

True. I detected no foam at all.

(Importation to the US and many other countries is already illegal. Breeding isn't but ought to be. If you want a productive way to spend your time, go lobby for that instead of lecturing at people who are doing their best to give these poor creatures happy and enriching lives.)

Oh, and one last thing: comparing animal domestication to the evils of human slavery is tremendously fucking insulting to the victims and survivors of the slave trade. Don't do it.

Just read an article that pointed out birds are no closer to us in evolution than dinosaurs were... except: Birds are actually, really almost twice as far from us as dinosaurs, since the last common ancestor is at least that far back (farther, of course).

Birds and cephalopods IMO are the best examples we have as to how varied intelligence can be, as both arose semi-independently of mammal/simian intelligence. From these three idioms, extrapolate what might be.

Most science fiction seems rather tame in its guesses, based on these alone. Certainly Star Trek was about 1% as weird as just Earth intelligence - although there's a hint of pangalactic consanguinity to justify the only-differing-in-ears-and-nose-shapes.

Fascinating. Time to do some digging.

As far as sci-fi doing aliens, David Brin's Uplift books have a pretty diverse group of alien species.

Does Try Not to Laugh make any of these videos? If not, is what they're doing legal? Is it right? Is it even funny?

BTW, you mean 'bizarre' as in, very strange or unusual, especially so as to cause interest or amusement. As in, I find keeping pets interesting and amusing.

As opposed to 'bazaar' a large open market where you can purchase, among other things, animals as pets.

Not sure what you meant by disgusting though. I'm guessing it has something to do with foam.

:-)
