Looking for a nice little speakeasy? Next time you're in NYC, check out the fine bars listed in Zagrat. Better go fast before they get too popular--they're already getting some hip press. Hey, it beats visiting a bedbug hotel or falling into a hipster trap.

All the bars in Zagrat have an uncanny resemblance to the human bar Miracles, may it rest in peace. Miracles was in the front room of some guy's house in Pittsburgh, on Polish Hill, and only opened after midnight when he was busy skiving off work as a currency trader of some sorts for a big multinational bank. There was a decrepit exercise bike and wood paneling, and he only served PBR and liquor he found in the floorboards of the house when he moved in. Then of course it became an art installation with a gallery show, which ruins all good things, as I'm sure all the rat patrons of these squeakeasies by now understand.

I'm not down with knee-jerk rat-hating. You do know that these brown rats SAVED humanity from the plague, by winning their war against the plague-vector black rats, right? Only to be treated like our Laotian Vietnam War allies, and painted with the brush of the enemy they fought against.

In NYC, where the very best restaurants put quality offerings on the sidewalk like clockwork, I have seen rats working two black bags. First a nibble of food here, then over there to lick the drips on a good bottle of wine, then back to the entree.
