Once, when I was younger (17) and somewhat reckless, I went to Boston. The first thing I did on arriving, was to find a newsagent and ask the guy behind the counter "hey, do you sell fags here"? Of course, I meant smokes - even now the word "fag" is widely used in that context here.

I work for the people who do TobaccoDocuments.org, and examples of early tobacco advertising such as this are a daily thing for me. For example...

- "Blow some my way."
- "Dawn-to-Dusk Smokers! Keep Mouth-Happy!"
- "Now you can smoke as many cigarettes as you want to!"
- "Smoke like a chimney? Who cares?"
- "More doctors smoke Camels."
- "Gee, Mommy, you sure enjoy your Marlboro!"

Sorry, I can't find any witty "fag" references today. ;)

Ha ha ha! The British slang term for "cigarette" has come to mean "homosexual" in contemporary American usage! Ha ha! Etymology is a laff riot!
