I don't know how to respond to this other than "I'm so glad I got being a religious teenager out of the way years ago"

In other words it is completely my jam thank you

Weren't the alt-right/neoreactionaries getting deeply into v a p o r w a v e / æ s t h e t i c s a while ago? I wonder if there'd be any overlap (as there must be between, say, ultramontane Catholics and proto-fascist intellectuals who talk about esoteric historical cycles and natural hierarchies and such)

This is terrific. Is there a Tradwave mix of a Latin mass I can listen to?

You know it's an astroturfed no-hope movement when there's not dozens of tumblrs with misspelled phrases from Latin mass, the Catechism, etc. This Doubting Thomas wants to see links to paschal_mysterv.tumblr.com and cogltatone-verbo-et-0pere.tumblr.com before I'll accept this as a Thing.

If this is one person just doing a thing because they want to idle away their time, I'll be delighted.

Filing this under “things I’m too old to understand.”

My, that folder’s bulging.

If so this would be the first I've heard anything like that. vaporwave has a some crossover with witch house and modern internet trap sounds, which would be in conflict with just about everything alt-right, but what the hell do I know anymore?

catholicism has survived by appropriation since, what...Paul?

what's impressive is the longevity of the strategy

I haven’t seen any more intersection of vaporwave with far-right stuff any more than I would expect from a typical present-day music genre/aesthetic just as a casual observer. However, “tradcath” sets off every single white supremacist alarm in my head. I’ve been dogpiled once by that crowd in Twitter. Whatever incoherent philosophy undergirds it is a thing to behold. Kind of like neoreactionary, but with the Catholic Church as the dictator? It’s real bad.

Taking a quick look at the Tumblr and Twitter accounts here I don’t see anything immediately objectionable but I’d be suuuper wary of the community around it.

I would guess there is no community around it and it's just someone who thought this would be interesting/ironic.

Yeah, the alt-right call it fashwave.

Eh, I have been an enjoyer of vaporwave for some time as a communist, but agree there is recent appropriation. I suspect it's that fascist populists are also wary of the hegemony of internationalist consumerism. But, you know, different.

You know who else appropriated the aesthetics of Communism, don't you?

I spent some more time with these images again this morning. I don't think there's any religious irony intended here, they all look like sincere expressions of Catholic faith and iconography. There's the irony of the vaporwave ӕsthetic itself, sure, but that's just the medium used. And there is a lot of Catholic iconography here, very detailed, someone who clearly knows it well. It looks to me like they treat it all with love.

My favorites are this Tower of Babel, the Four Evangelists, and the various images of the Virgen de Guadalupe, particularly this one.

To be clear, I don’t intend to impugn the content or its creator, which, near as I can tell and as Nelson says, is genuine appreciation of religious iconography remixed into a modern aesthetic, and I do enjoy the results. It’s just that, especially given the name, it has the risk of attracting the attention of and developing a following from a deeply unsavory crowd, one that I have some experience with. Enjoy the posts, be careful in the replies.
