Isola

Isola is a fantasy comic book that tells the story of Queen Olwyn, who has been transformed into a tiger. She is accompanied by Rook, her guard, who feels compelled to take her queen to the fabled island of Isola where she might become human again. Influenced by Hayao Miyazaki, the storytelling is more dependent on art than prose. It is published by Image comics and created and written by Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl (previously). Karl Kerschl and M.Sassy.K handle the art, with lettering done by Aditya Bidikar. The four recently worked together on Gotham Academy along with Becky Cloonan.

Isola is the result of a collaboration between Brenden and Karl that began when they were 10 years old. They have worked on and refined this story off and on in the intervening years. You can read more about the first issue or the new trade paperback. A complete breakdown of the first comic that goes deeply into the contributions of Michele Assarasakorn and Aditya Bidikar is in #10 of Panel x Panel.

It's beautiful, but I still don't see how this is a case for the 87th Precinct.

I read the available online portion and would like to read more. The first trade will be pretty lengthy, right? I am loathe to jump into unfinished comic series. I'm also not getting what ghibli/miyazaki love has to do with this comic, I do love those things but wasn't getting any vibe from that in the comic or story.

I preordered the trade what seems like about a million years ago, it’s due at the end of the month. It’s 136 pages which is probably about 6 issues of comic, which at modern densities should be a pretty quick, light read.

I think the emphasis on Miyazaki is to let you know that it is an image heavy comic, without a lot of dialogue. This is more common in Japanese comics than American comics. As Artw says, it will not take you long to read this comic. The appeal (to me, at least) is the beautiful art and colors and expressive body language.

I'm sorry, I misspoke. The authors are Canadian, so I'm sure they consider it a Canadian comic. Still more dialog in Canadian comics than Japanese comics, though.

Can anyone tell me if it might be good for an 8 year old? It's fine if it slow moving or abstract but I mean is it violent or sexual? The art looks awesome.
