Such a big talent who helped create the sound of Coletrain's quartet...and then continued creating amazing music for a lifetime.

Ah Jesus, one of the titans. Saw him decades ago, shook his hand after the gig—what massive fingers.

This has long been one of my favorites of his.

Big thanks to Willis Conover and his Voice of America Jazz Hour for introducing me and many others, on both sides of the Iron Curtain in the early 1960s, to the musical magic of McCoy Tyner.

Ona personal note: this one is such a fixture of my childhood ( Dad was a huge jazz fan) and so many of my favorite memories . . . (Sigh)

No one else played like him that I’ve ever heard, though he’s inspired so many younger players.

One of the downsides to being into "old music" (whether it's jazz, rock, or classical) is witnessing the deaths of the all-time greats happen one after the other, and the feeling of watching so much amazing talent and history fade out of public consciousness and into the mists of the past.

Although it is encouraged to learn standard jazz theory before going "outside," the first chords I practiced were 4th chords, because that's what I understood he did. It was 1n 1971. Jazz theory had to wait. And I shook his hand once: massive hand. Not like my delicate pianistic fingers. He was a powerhouse. Perpetual inspiration.

A couple personal favorites.

(If you've never heard McCoy Tyner ever I think Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" is the classic place to start, and of course "A Love Supreme." But he's one of THE jazz pianists, he's got a lot of brilliant recordings.)

What a bummer. I've been listening to McCoy off and on for the past year, wondering how I overlooked him.

His brother Jarvis ran for vice-president on the Communist ticket in '72 and '76, and is still active in the party. I bet they had some interesting conversations over the years.
