I am not confused. I am smiling despite having some bad news lately. Thank you!

Genre: DCI was brilliant.

This was great (and now I have to go find out more about Math Rock) but Pachbell's Canon baritone line on autorepeat is what I imagine hell is like.

slmtdahcjm (or anyone else), could you describe and/or expand on DCI? I liked that one. I can google fine, but I wouldn't mind a crash course.

DCI = Drum Corp International

At the top level, it's the best of the best competitive marching band performances you'll ever see. It's a breeding ground for musical precision.

Math Rock is one of those things that youtube discovered for me during quarantine and now it's my go-to around the house or reading background music. here's the kind of thing that turned me on to it

"Hey! That sounds like something Skatune Network would do!"

I was not disappointed. They're a fantastically talented person.

Extremely good. Would not be complete without linking to Goldfinger's excellent quarantine version of the song. They did a bunch more of their tunes in this style too, they are all pretty damn good.

Skatune Network is one of those things that makes me think there’s something worthwhile that’s come out of this internet mess after all.

Tricot is a math rock band so great we had a whole MeFi post about them (for which I am grateful).

Now that I’ve listened to the math rock segment, it was giving me total and uncanny Minus the Bear vibes.

There's still something so satisfying about a good ol' Company Front.

Vaporwave is just Gen Z doing 80s synth pop with more effects

Shoegaze is just indie that's too shy to start a conversation (its from the 80s, actually). It's called shoegaze because the members spend their time looking at the floor and pushing effects pedals rather than engaging the crowd

Hyperpop is pop music that's embarrassed to be pop music. (this is only half a joke, a lot of it is parody, but at what point does 100% parody become the true self?)

Math Rock is another niche thing that's been around longer than you think. Rush is math rock. It's... rock by people who are REALLY into music theory and polyrhythms.

anyway this is the best video I've ever seen, the DCI section had me laughin out loud.

Shoegaze has been around since the late 80s, and math rock since the late 90s, so it's not really an age thing.

I can't tell you a damn thing about Vaporwave or Hyperpop.

I did really enjoy this video though.

[sadly lowers euphonium and hastily backs out of the room. a small voice is heard from down the hall.]

"But the bass line of Bach's C minor Passacaglia is still cool, right?"

Weird, I was sufficiently into Goldfinger to own the EP Darrin’s Coconut Ass, but somehow I don’t know this song at all.

However I still think Mabel, she’s the bomb.

Is hyperpop the genre of the Duke Library song?
posted by Horace Rumpole at 6:10 PM on October 13, 2020

As a music genre pedant, I'd be remiss not to bring to the attention of The Blue that the "Indie" section would be more accurately described as "Bedroom Pop". And that the "Vaporwave" segment was mere parody because while it had the aesthetic it did not have the sound - not even close.

It is impossible to answer questions about hyperpop. Sorry...
