Happy 90th Birthday Gerhard Richter

Gerhard Richter, one of the greatest contemporary artists alive, turned ninety this week. Deutsche Welle maps out his long and illustrious career (in English), and the New York Review of Books covers a 2020 exhibition of his in New York City (PDF, no paywall).

Tate Gallery and MoMA show off some of his more famous pieces, and the Marian Goodman Gallery has a good selection of his recent artwork for sale if you're looking for something nice to put on your wall.

I saw the Ensemble Intercontemporain perform a Steve Reich piece set to the 2019/2020 Gerhard Richter / Corinna Belz film 946-3 just last fall, and thought to myself, wait wasn't this the candle guy? Turns out it is, so: happy b'day, G.!

German Art After 1960, currently at SFMOMA, has selections from their collection of Richter covering most of his career. Depending on where you're starting from, it may be worth a trip just to see Fenster and Stadtbild Madrid in person. I was particularly charmed by Lesende.

I love his work! A number of years back I watched the 2011 documentary on his work. At the time I was going through my own process of coming to understand and appreciate abstract paintings. At one point in the documentary, the curator at the Tate was doing a speech about his work while he was on stage behind her. She was going Full Art Criticism, and over her shoulder the look on Richter’s face read (to me) as “Lady, I just did what was aesthetically pleasing”.

I may have been projecting. :)

I’ve extra-admired his work since then, and was really happy to visit some of his paintings in person at the Tate in 2019.

Got to see his stained-glass window at Cologne Cathedral a few years ago. I can imagine it wouldn't be to some tastes, but I thought it was gorgeous in person.
