Well, MetaFilter is I think Matt Haughey, who’s the guy who created it, had the best description of MetaFilter, which is a social network for non friends.That is a really fascinating way to put it, from the perspective of someone who's made friends from the site, but yeah, we all start off as non-friends. And then some weird magic happens after we've typed at each other for a while.
I say that as someone who had a phone conversation with another Mefite today, mostly discussing us hanging out in a couple of weeks. It's somewhat strange to be reminded that the internet (and Metafilter) is just another third place, where people meet and develop friendships.
