Jeremiah Green, founding member and drummer for Modest Mouse, has died at age 45. Green performed only at the start of the band's 25th anniversary tour of their much-acclaimed album, The Lonesome Crowded West, and left to undergo treatment for cancer.

Damn, that's horrible.

He's up there wth Jim White as one of my favorite drummers ever. His work on LCW is extraordinary.

Oh man, this hits. I had fairly standard listening habits in my early-to-mid teens and then one day when I was seventeen I went into a record store, flipped through the new arrivals rack, picked out The Lonesome Crowded West and Beta Band’s Three EPs, and after checking them out at the listening station walked out with both. A week later I had become the sort of person who listened to that kind of music and only that kind of music, an indie kid, and largely remained that way for the next decade. A lot of bands I listened to a lot in those days have fallen by my musical wayside, but Modest Mouse never did. A while ago I was wondering why that was, and one thing that struck me as different about Modest Mouse was how inventive and surprising the drumming was, and the rhythm section of Green and bassist Eric Judy was among the best in indie rock, and just rock music in general. There are many great drum parts I could link to, but the one I used to play back in the day to show Modest Mouse off to my friends, was when the drums come on on Styrofoam Boots/It’s All Nice on Ice.

Just shocking to me that LCW was written when they were 20/21 years old.

So sorry to hear this. May his memory be a blessing.

Fuck this. When I was 15 a new kid in school named Blake introduced all of us to Lonesome Crowded West, and it blew us all away. I've seen them live maybe a half dozen times over the years and he was always tremendous. The drum intro from Trucker's Atlas still plays in my head every time I think of the word "party." A huge talent gone way too soon.

I saw them at Riotfest and they were fantastic live. Snoop was doing a 25th anniversary tour of Doggystyle, and his performance was delayed due to audio issues. When the time came for Modest Mouse to go on, Snoop was still on stage. The kids who were there to see Modest Mouse started booing really loud, and shook Snoop. He could not believe it!

WHAT THE FUCK oh man. I know Jeremiah locally and this is the first time I've learned about someone's death like this first via MetaFilter or the internet and I just started yelling.

He wasn't the rocks star drummer to me. He was this really nice, shy nerdy dude I used to see out around town at bars and like to talk about synths.

What the fuck!?

Ok, I've talked to some local people and apparently they kept his diagnosis secret until just days before his passing, which makes sense about why I didn't even hear about it, or anyone in our close knit community. His partner had a really cute gift shop in town which closed a few weeks ago and rather suddenly, and this all makes that all make more sense, too.

Oh my, Modest Mouse. Such beautiful, raucous romanticism.

I saw them at Sit & Spin in 1997 or so (1998?). They were awful! Isaac Brock drunk and stumbling, every song loose and sloppy. It was fantastic anyhow: a big splashy mess of rock and roll energy.

Those guys knew how to tap into life-force energy and make it sing, crashing and sweet all at once. My 20-something years were better for it.
