The Exhausting World of Making a Caddicarus Video

YouTube videos can be really well produced, with a lot of shots and custom video footage and various tricks and things to make the entire product more thrilling to view. But what exactly does making one of these things actually entail? Well, YouTuber Caddicarus created The Exhausting World of Making a Caddicarus Video [1h2m] in which he uses all these great techniques to make a video about creating all these great techniques. I've spent enough time watching videos and wondering "could I do that?" that this was a really great all-in-one roll-up of what this one creator does for his videos.

I made it a few minutes into the video and noped out when he offhandedly called a woman on the back of a game case a “bitch”. I had no idea who this Youtuber was but now don’t really feel the need to find out more.

What is this mania that drives people to do this for a living?

He seems to be paying himself minimum wage to do a drudgery of a job that is exhausting, and not fun - all for the privileged of not doing a '9 to 5' which.. uhm.... dude a 9-5 would probably be less punishing?

But then again he has more than a million followers on youtube, so I imagine the monetary rewards make up for the constant content tredmill..

There are various estimates about how much money YouTube pays (it appears to vary wildly), but a channel with 1M+ subscribers likely earns a fair amount of revenue.

He's making quite a bit more than minimum-wage, but his reflection about nearly quitting the industry is a likely accurate reflection that things really suck if you're doing this full-time, and have not crossed the threshold of (relative) stardom.

Also +1 to the WTF on the casual misogyny. I was about to note that the guy (initially) seemed far less troll-ish than most of the other dudes who make this kind of video, and then..... nope. I get that his audience is teenage boys, but.... that's even more reason to not say shit like that.

I got through nearly the whole thing expecting the violent casual misogynistic comments to stop. I thought to myself Surely … but when he stuck a gun in his mouth to joke about blowing his brains out? Yeah, I realized it was going to keep getting worse. So I fast forwarded to the end to see the video we watched him make and found out that he used it as an opportunity to create video game characters that are dumpy swamp women (his words) so. That’s cool. He never has a normal one about women. I’m not surprised his girlfriend and her daughter will take advantage of any opportunity to throw things at him. Which might be the closest thing to an even *neutral* statement about a woman he makes. I need to go watch kittens as brain bleach now.

I don't know if the "Related Posts" list at the bottom of a MetaFilter page is the same for everyone, but the Related Posts for this thread are... hilariously unrelated.

Bah. If anyone has behind-the-scenes videos to share that are not misogynistic or otherwise bigoted, I'd be interested in watching.

Me, too. I'd watch "The Making of How to Patch a Hole in Your Wall" and "The Making of Child Interviews Teacher" avidly if they gave me beyond-rank-amateur tips. The trouble with this one, bigotry aside, is that the useful stuff / cheap, irritating tricks ratio is too low to get me to watch through.

Apologies to those who got something out of this, but it seems to have the affliction I call "too much personality." I'd dare suggest that the reason he spends 80% of his time in his studioffice is his self-conscious kitchen sink production style. Literally nobody would notice if he displayed all of the words of a caption at the same time.

I'd probably like the 20min version of this (sans misogyny).
