After getting picked up by Netflix after being a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger and the ill-fated Chapek regime, the Nimona movie now has a teaser trailer and a release date - June 30th.

Oh wow, best news I've heard all day. Granted it's not much of a day! But this is fantastic. Not enough to judge, but it looks fun.

It definitely doesn't look like what I anticipated, but that's because I didn't know what to anticipate. Gingerhaze's art style is not what I thought that they would want for a big-budget picture, which is not an insult; it's very warm, but it's not toyetic. And sadly, it's not hard to imagine why the two male leads aren't in the teaser, although their relationship was a big focus in the book.

This looks awesome. Too bad it isn't being released in theaters. It would have been really awesome if the first movie I saw since the pandemic were Nimona.

If you're in NY/LA, check the theaters - Netflix definitely wants this to be eligible for Best Animated Picture, so there will be the required screenings.

I am so glad to hear this is really, truly happening! And I adore the Teen Girl Squad vibes of Nimona's drawings.

Is the Lumberjanes series still happening? I haven't heard anything recent about it, and with the HBO/Discovery merger it would be nice to know that it didn't get cut.

Sometimes, it turns out, we can have nice things.

Woo-hoo!!!! Nimona!!!

When it was being posted, I read it online and it really made me laugh at a crummy time.

Everyone has seen the Broship of the Ring, right? I think ND Stevenson has moved on from it, but I would still totally go for an entire Broship short film.

That's a good spot (or not spot). This seems like a movie about the character Nimona, more than a retelling of Nimona the book.

Oh hell yes, Broship! Perhaps my favorite single piece from the series is the Fellowship Relationship Chart.

So glad to hear Nimona is actually getting released and not landing in the dumpster like Batgirl.

I'm glad this is coming out. I'm not sure that I'd call Nimona a hero, though.

I'm not sure that I'd call Nimona a hero, though.

Why, though? From my understanding, one of the points of the story is that the in universe definitions of "hero" and "villain" are tied to the fucked up societal structure of the setting.

Sure, the definitions of hero and villain are messed up. However, Blackheart, who's the heroic villain of the story is appalled by Nimona's behavior, and a lot of their interactions are him trying to get her to be a less horrible person.

She does do a lot of murders early on.

Yeah, I hope they get Blackheart's story in there, because he and Nimona play off against each other really well, and their separate stories of sadness and loss reflect each other and the way that they (sometimes against their intentions) force each other to face those histories and become better people sharks.

I mean, while I am up for some shape-changing violent girl power, Nimona, to me, was a story of sad, beaten people finding each other and doing better, and I hope that doesn't get lost.

I had no idea Netflix had picked it up, so this is very exciting.

Given that the movie was canned by Disney and had to be picked up by Netflix because of the queer content -- and specifically a same-sex kiss between Blackheart and Ambrosius -- I'm pretty sure Blackheart's story hasn't been eliminated from the film.

(This happened under the mercifully brief tenure of Disney's then-CEO Bob Chapek, whose anti-LGBT track record also include cancelling The Owl House and slashing the final season down to three episodes, and preventing the theatrical release of Everybody's Talking About Jaimie. He shall not be missed.)

How fucked is it that it s five companies that produce billion$ in video stories, but also like 4-5 white dudes whose dumb apparatchik opinions matter on those billion$ of cultural production.

Nimona lives. The comic rules. Burn down the castles.

This is very exciting to me. I was totally on board with She-Ra simply because I love Adora. ("I'm a six-foot Amazon warrior! Hello!") Nimona gives me the same vibes. (Like Arcane.)

This is great news. My family loves the book, and my son was excited that there was going to be a movie, and then bummed out when it was cancelled. I look forward to seeing his response to this news!

Love the look of this! Beautiful animation like this makes me so happy.

Nimona is a hero like Mike Tyson is a hero, a hero of the Id.

Except Nimona was imagined for the sake of teaching empathy across genders and species, and Tyson is much too real to be imagined.

Batman is fine, though, because he's a rich.

Actually Blackheart is also, basically Batman, isn't he? Anyway, Nimona is awesome.

Here's a clip from the movie of Nimona meeting Blackheart.
