Wheelchair Skills and Contest

Last year's Dutch wheelchair skills contest had me looking for events in my neighbourhood. Many individual contestants have their own videos you can watch, or you can check out the Wheelchair Skills Team website (in Dutch).

If you are looking to learn new skills or find new approaches, without a contest, Wheelchair Skills training might be for you (in English and French)! If you use either a manual or power wheelchair, or a scooter, there are documents and videos you might find interesting.

If you'd like to mix your skills with other wheelchair-related content, from how to buy a new chair to travel tips, both Gem Hubbard at WheelNoHeels and Richard Corbett at Wheels2Walking, have you covered.

Those are some talented people. Those courses look HARD.

I swear to God, I thought the woman in the first link was coming up to swing across a gap on that rope, Indiana Jones style.

The former extreme sports enthusiast in me is like "I wanna try that".

The guy who spent a few days pushing his wife around Philadelphia in a rental chair when we went on vacation there after her knee replacement (Somehow we managed to go up to the top of the "Rocky" steps like 3 times) is thinking "holy crap, the difficulty that some of those relatively simple obstacles presents really puts into new perspective all of those misalignments in sidewalk segments, lack of landing spaces on ramps, random utility furniture in the middle of sidewalks, and myriad other ways that we fuck up our non-automobile infrastructure.

straw, as a regular chair user, you are so right.

This inspires me to make good on my long-held dream of coordinated mobility scooter drill team stuff.

I like that the wheelchair skills contest is just regular things you have to do in a wheelchair. The real awful one in there that might not be obvious is the deep gravel. That’s a monster.
