Planet of the Bass - DJ Crazy Times ft Ms Biljana Electronica As we proceed further along the Goncharov timeline, a 90s Eurotrash classic has been unearthed. Though if you missed the actual way you encountered it, someone uploaded their VHS copy.

If you've been wondering where the heck, "women are my favorite guy" came from, it came from this parody that originally went viral on TikTok. The American comedian behind the DJ persona, Kyle Gordon, explains the whole thing.

(Feel free to enjoy the comments where people are fully committing to the bit with their recollections of the European 90s clubbing scene)

(I understand you can date it to the early 00s but hey, European dance music was never cutting edge at the time.)

I found this NPR walkthrough to be useful, albeit dizzying.

this bounced right off me, despite really liking the original tiktok post. it just feels like taking a keen and tidy 1-2-3 joke and stretching it out to the fifteen minutes wanda sykes would take to tell it. good to see the original actress back though.

After listening to the full version I do think the teaser picked the best 1 minute out of the full song. The rest was a bit underwhelming.

Also the best part about the three versions of the video with different actresses is that none of those three are the woman who recorded the lyrics.

Agreed, seeing the entire video (on VHS) is great, but the teaser definitely got the best out of the concept.

I'm still going to have the song stuck in my head for the next few days, though.

Which makes it an even more perfect parody. The lyrics might as well be "This is not the chorus yet / Don't worry the chorus will be here soon / I promise that the chorus you love / Is right around the bend / CHORUS"

Best Youtube comment I've seen so far.

The moment when Biljana changes back into her iconic outfit from the first video is the moment that proved that, yes, it IS possible to be nostalgic for two weeks ago. A pure triumph.

Any one of those lines of garbled English is hilarious, but the cumulative effect is too many errors to be plausible and it kind of breaks the spell for me

Even though it's a parody, When we out in the space in the planet of the BASS! is dope as hell! I hope somebody samples it.

It's really cool of DJ Crazy Times and Miss Biljana Electronica to allow the Jonas Brothers to open for them like that.

Pairs nicely with this parody of the iconic German eurorave group Scooter by a Swedish comedy sketch show: Party in Heaven.

It's unfortunate that he leaned in on making bad English grammar a part of the bit, because the English lyrics of Eurodance songs tended to be simple, but grammatically-fine.

Putting that aside, I'm surprised this comedian put together an otherwise clever and nuanced parody, considering that his other videos are... neither of those things.

i mean, the grammar generally isn't wrong, exactly, but it's not right either, and it's often pretty far from idiomatic english.

i recall reading — probably in something linked to by someone on metafilter — that the big-name scandinavian pop songwriters consider their distance from idiomatic english as one of the things that explains how popular scandivian-written pop is. gleefully ignoring idiom and grammar lets them use whatever words sound best for the song, without regard to whether those words make sense in any conventional way.

it's interesting how "novelty thing parodying off-kilter european pop but it turns out to be a kinda great song" is a recurrent theme across the decades.

please don't take this me being a cranky old person dismissing planet of the bass just because someone from like 20 years ago did something similar except shifted a little bit to the east. like, i'm not in this thread to be like "steve allen zladko already did it!" both planet of the bass and elektronik supersonik are undeniable unstoppable bops, and i will fite anyone who says otherwise.
