Dr. Glaucomflecken has been a busy doctor comedian since his last appearance on the blue. His specialty is satirical videos about doctors and health insurance. That are a bit too on the nose. posted by KaizenSoze (15 comments total) 28 users marked this as a favorite

Gemstones:
Here’s a lesson I’ve learned as a physician publicly making fun of other physicians over the last 8 years. Don’t make fun of anybody’s *ability* to do their jobs. Jokes like that can undermine public trust in what we do, even if it’s “just a joke.”

I encourage you to make fun of things physicians say, idiosyncrasies, mannerisms, personalities. We’re weird people. For example, make fun of EM’s dependence on Diet Coke, not their ability to intubate a patient. When I’ve made people mad it’s usually because I violated this rule

Two things you can ALWAYS make fun of: yourself and ophthalmologists responding to an in-flight medical emergencies

As someone who works with doctors in family medicine and a hospital, it's all very familiar. (But with Canadian medicine.)

"Pilot needs a new set of reading glasses, stat" is a hilarious mid-flight-crisis skit.

This is strange because I just recently noticed that my PCP is private equity now, and not because they told me. It just became obvious.

Metafilter's librarians may appreciate Glaucomflecken's take on scholarly journal publishing fees.

He is so, so good.

The rural medicine routines are favorites of my rural family members.

If I were the CEO of United Healthcare, I would simply quit and make mugs in seclusion after his video about Doctor's Day.

"Sir, doctors hate us more than anything in the world."

I love his videos.

Also, I skip the ones portraying Jonathan, the ophthalmologist's "loyal scribe".
Considering some medical scribes are trained medical professionals from poorer countries (including doctors) I find those videos insensitive at best.

I am tempted to send a few of his videos to folks I know who want to vote to abolish our universal healthcare system because private healthcare "works better". Especially the one about pre-authorizations.

Yep, his rural medicine stuff is spot on, as someone who works in a (non US) rural hospital.

Especially "a farmer coming in? By themselves? No-one's forcing them? Prep the trauma team."

Not only accurate from a professional point of view but my cousin-in-law who is a mid 30's fit farmer voluntarily went into emergency recently with a simple cut on her finger and of course wound up intubated in intensive care because it was far more serious than she thought/was letting on.

I always took Jonathan to be a) Dr G poking fun at his own speciality for getting carried by their staff and b) his way of showing how incredibly valuable support staff are - Jonathan is deeply coveted by all the other doctors

The comments are really interesting too. Lots of medical people telling stories.

Jonathan is portrayed as competent and hardworking, he's also portrayed as fulfilling [not just medical but also] personal servant duties.
The ophthalmologist is assigning him tasks by saying his name and nodding his head a little.

This part is what makes me cringe. The videos where a trained medical professional is serving the doctor grapes and packing his bags for a trip.

Thank you for sharing the neonatology video! As the mother of a NICU alum, it resonated.

Dude seems like a real one and I’m happy he’s gotten positive attention. I like the residency interview videos (I think orthopedics is my fav).

I love that the ER doctor is always in a bike helmet and gear -- and often carrying a bike -- which seems accurate to me.
